What do you think about identity politics?

What do you think about identity politics?

I personally think they're cancer and giving the left a bad name. These stupid idiots think that they can combat racism by, guess what, adding even MORE racism.

For those who don't know (why wouldn't you), this is basically how they think:

White cis males: muh privileged
White women: Not muh privileged
Colored people (mostly focusing on black people): Even less muh privileged
Colored women: Even less muh privileged than colored men

and so on…

But shouldn't the left focus on making it better for the working class, no matter of color, gender and sexuality? And yes, I'm aware of that racism and sexism still exist in this world, but these people are seriously retarded.

As bad as the retards calling everything they don't like "idpol" here.

Its a mixed bag. LGBT rights are important and traps are treated like 2nd class citizens in many places in Europe and North America alone.

weird-aggressive-gender-studies-majors =/= identity politics. i recommend anarchopac's video on it.

You're preachin' to the choir mate

They are literally an idpoler.

...

There are commies here who want me doing hard labor in a prison for 5 years just for being gay, so I'm not opposed to it in all cases.

...

I think it makes the most sense to send them to gulag first, because you might manage to convert some reactionary not socialists into actual socialists in the process.

The disparate races of man were never meant to live together therefore they are 100% correct.

continuation: the basis of oppression is capitalism, and hierarchy, and that should be our main focus. though we shouldn't ignore the issues of minorities in pursuit of it.
i think op's argument/criticism is pretty flaky and is just a repeat of what is usually said around here.

No, but that's not identity politics, that's just pure discrimination. I never said that there still aren't problems. There's still a lot of racism, sexism and homophobia left in the world. What I mean is that these people think that they can combat for example racism by acknowledging the existence of races.

And because they use these degenerate tactics to combat some very real problems, and wanting to only talk about "how white men are cis muh privileged scum!", they're just end up being a bunch of clowns with a lot of influence, while giving the left a bad name.

tl;dr it's inherently reactionary

Using identity as the kernel around which you build your politics is counterproductive because identity is inherently multi-faceted and indefinite. Any politics built around identity will necessarily essentialize, alienate, and exclude almost everyone that falls outside of the normative boundaries they associate with the identities they claim to represent.
Intersectionality actually makes the problems of this approach worse because it considers the intersections between identities, which only sharpens the notion of identity and ends up essentializing, alienating, and excluding even more people than would be otherwise. Additionally intersectionality places different oppressions on the same playing field, which precludes the possibility of considering each oppression within it's own, separate historical context.

The only good kind of identity politics is one which understands identities to be nebulous, arbitrary categories that are the products of the sociohistorical contexts they were created in. However, this strays so far from what most people understand identity politics to be that I don't think you could fairly call this "identity politics" at all tbqh.
