As far as I know Romania had very fast economic growth from 1950 to 1980.That is why he had one of the most stable of regimes in Eastern Bloc. Then austerity, then crash.

Good: no welfare. You worked or you get fucked. Strives to keep the country self-sufficient. Was hard-ass on corruption, and also tried to keep the country ideologically together. Although he got a huge debt and implemented harsh policies and food restriction because of it, he actually managed to pay he IMF off in the summer of 1989.Much to their surprise. Coincidentally, the winter of 1989 was when the （（（revolution））） happened.
After the revolution, the swarm of locusts that accumulated under him, but which he was nonetheless, keeping in check, now ruled the country. The socialist industries that actually worked they privatized or sold for scraps, the ones that were corrupt they kept. Now they keep us complacent with welfare and promises of increased pensions, while selling the country bit by bit and digging us into a bigger debt hole than ol Ceasca ever did. We had no debt in 89. That was unheard of in the region.
In Romania, the politicians will always steal something unless there is someone above looking down with a stake in his hand. That's simply the nature of our political class, and has been for a very long time.
All in all, he was an oddball. You could say we pitted the country under Ceausescu, until we saw what came after him.

I didn't watch this film myself (though I know the language), but I was looking for some good films to give to my mother, who is Romanian. So I downloaded this for her, and she came back and told me never to give her anything like this again, as she thought it was depressing.
We might watch Bacalaureat (same director iirc), which I did enjoy.

What they did to people in those prison camps was fucked. And its not like the prisoners where all fascists or spies for the west, many where former members of the communist party that protested against Russian dominance or authotarianism of the party leadership. Also many where intelectuals and academics.
