The distinction between left and right came about during the French Revolution where members of the National Assembly literally split so that republicans sat on the left and royalists on the right. The fundamental quality of being on the left was that you wanted to fundamentally alter the existing socio-economic structure. There were democracies (not in Greece, which was a slave society but elsewhere), but they were a more ancient system than the slave societies and feudal monarchies that also existed at the time. Those democracies (exclusively in complex hunter-gatherer societies) were a part of the established order that was overthrown by the emerging slave societies.

On anime, I've been watching anime since the early 90s, and it's pretty easy to say the vast majority of political themes in anime are right wing. Political anime almost always has this ultra-nationalist "We were great before fucking America bombed us for no reason" strain through it, or basically makes arguments for a Fascist technocracy.

There are the notable exceptions, Generally, the older anime creators (guys now in their 60s, 70s, 80s) tend to be quite left wing but go read about the history of Toei and how Ghibli was founded for example as to why this happened. Radical left wing Feminists were ironically also involved in the creation of Comiket through Shojou groups. But Anime political themes over time have gotten pretty fucking right wing and nationalist.
