mandatory UEFI in my bios prevents me from installing linux

Fucking bourgies

DUDE LIFESTYLISM WITH COMPUTERS LMAO

Memes aside, isn't it more of a safety/security issue? It's kind of like saying that knowing how to use a gun in a warzone is "lifestylism".

better?

You niggas call me when you have user friendly standardization

I am running Mint and will got to vanilla Ubuntu soon.

All cumming is bourgeois tbh

Windows is an awful OS. Odds are that any "good" components will be integrated into Linux post-revolution rather than having the world continue to use the whole thing. Also, DirectX (the only reason to use Windows) would become open source, thereby removing the only real reason to use windows anywys.

Post-revolution applications will use open standards that aren't designed for one single trainwreck OS.

I more or less need to use Windows because my university requires .docs for various documents that are passed around. Fortunately, Microsoft generously lent me a copy of the system, not the Office package though. Please don't even joke about this.

spoiler alert: the propertiary will just move into the chips themselves, like Intel already did. we need widespread OpenCores right now.

I'm using a GNU operating system if that's what you mean. Linux is becoming the corporate arm of open source.

Explain.

Just look at all the proprietary crap the major hardware manufacturers keep pushing into the kernel.

Just pirate Office and run it on Wine. That's what I did when I switched over to linux but still preferred Office over libreoffice.

That sounds like a shitty uni. You should encourage them to use a portable format like PDF instead.

Anyway, LibreOffice should be able to handle .docs files, no?

What's the difference.

...

Some of them, sure. Butchering all the others, though.

I use the DPRK's stolen version of OSX.

Never trust anyone who uses proprietary software or social networks! Even if they are well meaning, they will unintentionally snitch on you by using them. Not to mention that their every interaction strengthens the global surveillance network. Please remember that this is not a personal choice, this is a social problem. If you are using proprietary software or social networks, you are aiding the enemy. It's that simple.

I use whatever works and have torrented Windows 7. I used a distro on my laptop though.

You know that debian , fedora , ubuntu and so on can boot on UEFI, right ?

anyway old version of word werk through wine ( search PlayOnLinux)

Here you go:
crowdsupply.com/sutajio-kosagi/novena

But Mint is better than Ubuntu. There's zero point to change.

It instantly shows though, if you are using proprietary crap. You can even seperate real communists from liberals this way.

Any distro can boot on UEFI.
He probably have some secure boot shit on his machine.

Mint has had serious security breaches in the past and Xubuntu has better defaults than Mint Xfce edition. Cinnamon and MATE are crap and Mint has no official flavor of LXDE.

Nigger that's just a regular old ARM board.

Are you an idiot or a liar?
I can't quite make up my mind.

It's an ARM board with SODIMM and mPCI slots. I'd rather just get a regular board with a better CPU + an FPGA dev board and save about 400 bucks.

Mint's package management system is all kinds of fucked up.

what, proprietary drivers for random periphreals? use the deblobbed kernel if you really give a shit about that.

I don't understand freetard zealots sometimes.

Oh hell yes!

get real bruh

Because there is 0 reason to use a FOSS operating system if you have to use closed-sourced code just to get it to work. It's like wanting an electric vehicle but in order to start it up you need to burn an entire tank of gas first.

hahaha dude do you think the only useful thing about linux is that it's FOSS? you don't know what the fuck you're on about m8

Really makes you think!

Open drivers still work fine though, i don't see what all the fuss is about.
Also Arch Linux master race

...

what's wrong with it?

No but the thread topic wasn't about programming environments or server maintenance, it was about not using windows or apple because they're shitty neolib capitalist companies. If you're going to run linux because of muh freedom and then there's no point in sticking a closed source graphics card in your computer and downloading the closed source drivers to play closed sourced games.

daily reminder Debian is the most revolutionary operating system

Nah, I don't subscribe to this dumb "all or nothing" mentality regarding open source. For the record, the biggest reason proprietary drivers are still a thing is because there's a highly limited selection of open source hardware out there, that's something that is slowly changing but right now, it's just how it is. We live in a capitalist society, that's not to say there isn't any merit in undoing as many of capitalism's locks on your life as you can just because there are some you currently can't. Using GNU/Linux for the reason that it's FOSS (as well as just being an objectively better OS than Mac/Windows) and using FOSS software and drivers where possible is an example of doing just this.

You mean Devuan.

there is a google-free version of android?

Cyanogenmod is freer but IIRC there are proprietary aspects of it.

Are you sure you're a leftist?
Think about it using your own logic:

-A commune needs collective ownership of as much existing capital as possible in order to function right? Or else workers don't actually own the means of production.
-Free Software needs as much of the existing programmers and users as possible, or else the end user does not actually have ownership of the software he's using.

Right and shrugging your shoulders and buying another nVidia card isn't helping is it? I'm fine if you have to use windows and proprietary shit because you need to for work (a surprisingly lot of science programs still require windows) but most people on this thread aren't talking about anything important. They want to play their call of duty and buy into the whole "gamer" shit and want to pretend their revolutionaries. If you're not willing to sacrifice, especially some bullshit like AAA video games, then you ain't a fucking revolutionary. Nothing will ever change if you keep supporting the system you claim to hate but continue using because not using it would inconvenience you a little. I have a hard time believing even half of Holla Forums actually reads anything of value when fiddling around with a terminal or running WINE is too hard for them.

/this
I try to do my thesis with entirely FOSS software. It's not Impossible to complete a Physics PH.D with LaTeX, Octave, ROOT, and vim.
I only rely on proprietary javascript to get my college Homework done.

Regarding Nvidia, the nouveau driver is actually very stable. Also no one in this thread has mentioned gaming. But now that you have, I may as well say this: you're allowed to enjoy pop culture shit like gaming and Hollywood movies and still be a committed leftist. If you're worried about supporting the system, then pirate as much as possible. You're coming off as a cynical purist.

Is LXDE better than XFCE? I've never heard of LXDE

It's lighter. My personal choice is i3-gaps.

IMO if your going as far as LXDE for lightness alone you may aswell go the whole way and just use a wm, unless youre technologically illiterate and on old hardware.

This tbh. Using gentoo with bspwm right now, comfy as fuck.

I used bspwm for a bit but I couldnt quite mesh with it being almost entirely kb driven.
I'm on awesomewm currently which is a good middleground, it works solidly as both a tiling wm and a floating wm, also its really customisable with the lua scripting (though I havent touched the config outside of the theme).

They fit different uses. I like using LXDE on my laptop because it's so light I save some battery use. Prefer Xfce on my desktop. I do however appreciate that the Openbox component of LXDE provides a unique feature in its pipe menu customization that no other desktop environment or window manager can really lay claim to.

I always end up using PCManFM with Openbox and eventually adding a panel for other features. Once you reach that point you might as well just use LXDE.

Yeah that feature is really nice, I used to run a version of BlackBox in windows (proprietarty version, which OpenBox is a free fork of).

is it worthy to install?

Did Blackbox actually have full pipe menus where you can pipe the output of a script in real time to a menu? Fluxbox is the other major fork of Blackbox and I know it doesn't.

I've nothing wrong with the spirit of the FOSS community nor complaints about the multiple objective concerns of proprietary corporate software but being dogmatist about it is literally retarded.

If you're a dogmatist you damn better be running your shit on your own-self built hardware with your own self-generated energy because otherwise you're just an autistic LARPer.

iirc you could do something like that, I just used the yaml configuration to build the menus.

cyanogenmod is deprecated, the company running it basically suddenly cut all their funding.
There's a community fork called LineageOS which is picking up where they left off though

i have a LG e612, i heard that if i change the ROM it can be faster an have more space, is it true?

Maybe you can get rid of some of the bloat, it cant hurt to try. Plus if you have root access you can have enough control to disable things which are slowing you down and get some longevity out of your hardware.

it's allready pretty fucking broken

oh yeah depending on how old your software is too, you might actually be able to get some performance by installing something with a newer version of the linux kernel. Though if your lacking on flash storage or RAM that can sometimes be an issue.

i need something light with google play
is lineageOS compatible with my phone?
where can i buy the ROM and how can i change it?

I like the free software community, but the proper leftist response to proprietary software is simply to eliminate it from a legal perspective. State socialists would also likely approve of releasing major products like Windows as free software.

That said, you don't use Linux for ethical reasons, you use it because it provides a far superior user experience these days, which is impressive given that Miguel de Icaza basically attempted to ruin it so Apple would hire him.

Heres the xda page for lineage on your model, it may seem kinda shady being a random forum page but for some reason thats how the android open source dev community is…
To flash a ROM it depends on how locked down your device is but usually you can sideload it with adb - look into some tutorials on how to flash ROMS first. If you are unsure, be very careful because you can brick your device in some cases, if you arent confident with technology you should find a friend who can help you out.

most things will support google play, you just have to sideload gapps, again you can google how to do this.

i will make my investigation
and also i will trust in you user
anon is not someone to can really trust

not true, only certain distros that bought a key can, like fedora and ubuntu.
yeah, and the bios of my Laptop doesn't let me disable it. its literally mandatory. its an ROG asus

...

well you already made a mistake so…

MANJARO

You are confusing secure boot with UEFI. It is not the same thing.
You only need a key if you have a machine with enforced secure boot.

linux is the very foundation on which online and offline businesses deliver products and services to the market without having any limiting vendor lock-ins, proprietary unverifiable code or high licensing costs
linux is ancap to the bone

lol and windows isn't? all software is ancap to the bone because its made under capitalism

see:

Nightmare Mode: Being limited to open hardware or what the FSF approves or FreeBSD on an ARM device and only connecting with GNUNet peers

Winshit 10 because of muh vidya gaems

Open driver have been devolped for most nvidia cards and some AMD cards.

I just have an old shitbag of a computer with windows 95 my dad gave me.

Nvidia cards are actually the most free. The "open source" AMD /ATI driver have binary blobs so if you can get an nvidia card working with nouveau its more free than an AMD card.

Do you even communism?

I use that though. Thinkpad x60 with trisquel is fine. Not nightmarish.

on an librebooted ARM chromebook with Archlinux. It's comfy.
