Spectre Rouge Update

Hey comrades, sorry for the long wait for this update.

For those who don't know, Spectre Rouge is an online journal meant to be the spiritual successor to bunkermag, but with a greater focus in content and aesthetic.

spectrerouge.com/index.php/2017/06/19/welcome-to-spectre-rouge/

Here's a description I wrote up earlier:

>If you’re interested, contact me at [email protected]/* */

We have some great art and articles coming in, here's some of the art from myself and catgirl drawfriend. The site is still being built but my room mate who's a CS major and tech support worker is helping me out with it.

So first things first, I have decided to delay the release to early October. This is for two reasons, mainly. My summer job has been taking up much more of my time and energy than I was expecting, and I also thought it would be more fitting if it was released with the anniversary of the October revolution.

Which gives you more time to write, draw and submit!

Email me at [email protected]/* */
Contact me on twitter at @realenverhoxha
And I also now have a youtube channel where you can catch my ramblings and occasional updates on this project. youtube.com/channel/UCNH931J01zVmeKPjM3aqEow

There's also a patreon if you want to donate which will only take your money once the finished product is released. However, due to the long-term nature of the project I will understand if abstain until we've further proven our credibility. The money would go towards paying contributors and server costs.

Wew I should get an income soon so I'll donate to this and getchan

Thanks fam, we appreciate it.

Nice art. Did you draw them yourself?

The charcoal drawing is mine, yea.

I'm a drawfag I can contribute.

We'd appreciate anything ya got! I think we have a piece coming in from someone who was with the zapitistas, we also have something about what it means to be a comrade, and a piece about the reactionary influence of pizza company owners, along with others. You can draw something related to that, or something of your own creation and I'm sure we'd find a way to fit it in.

I'm glad everything's going great. Maybe you should bump the thread next time though before it gets pushed out of existence.

I'm not sure if this will ever be a problem again… if it is now. But if you have a bunch of articles coming in now, maybe you should delay some of them until the next issue. I'd hate for there to be tons of interest for the first edition and then silence for the others.

Also what is the new deadline?

I might have to do that, but I still have plenty of room at this point.

Let's stick it at September 25th.

Bumpu

I want to write but I don't want to write 1,500 words. I can say what I want in fewer words. Can I still submit?

So is this like a blog or more like the lainzine?

Less like a blog more like a magazine, we'll have a print edition too hopefully

You're welcome to submit, but we probably won't take anything under 1000

...

Bump

I'll offer to write an article. Check out my own blog, leftofwreckage.wordpress.com to see my quality.

I said it before, and I say it again: Bunkermag failed because it really could not keep up quality and fucked up by not handling content flow well. Yes, at first you have to have at least a few articles on your first appearance, but after you have a good base you need to learn to control content flow to keep yourself from long dry spells appearing because you didn't control flow enough.

Second most important thing is getting quality content creators, and third is having a visually pleasing and catchy site design.

Well, good site design is actually probably number two, but vies for number one.

I think your e-zine name is not very good. Needs to be catchy, to flow. Either a single name that exemplifies the spirit of the mag, or a very short phrase.

It's okay to have some articles arguing from opposing positions, but a decent publication needs to have an invariant stance on some topics. If the positions of the people behind the project change a lot over time including the fundamental positions of the publication, if you are honest it is time to put that under a new name.

Pick one. Reminder that A. W. is on so many levels of the drug of idealism (and also literal drugs) that he thinks that the description of production as a circular process (things used as inputs in their own production, e. g. chickens) is the fallacy of circular thinking and that all prices are formed based entirely on individual whims.

I want to contribute but none of the many 2500+ words articles I sent to the predecessor, Bunkermag, went through. Not even a reply saying "no", "it's shit, fuck off" or "can't respond right now". When Bunkermag was at its least dead (2015ish) I sent my last email, and I haven't heard anything at all since. Sad!

Maybe you should draw some leftcom catgirls instead.

On a more serious note, maybe the last dude was going insane from sifting through overly long submissions. Take a 3200-word article and turn it into a 1600-word one to see if it makes a difference.

plz, comrade, stop

I've been thinking about writing something about left-unity or the concept of looting the free market place of ideas. Imma try to write some thing and if I think its not shit I might submit it.
This better happen either way, I like the idea.

How were you sending them In? If it was by email I would not have got them as only the sitedev sees it and he's been unresponsive for years. You would have needed to make an acount and submit it that way. Also, we've still had publishing, just a couple months ago we had that polemic exchange with unruhe.

If you'd like you can send one of them to me now for considsration.

You are welcome to submit something. Anything you submit will be judged by the same editorial standards as all other submissions. What topic would you like to write about?

Unfortunately, since I bought the domain we are sticking with the name, as for site design, we are currently working on it, and would love some feedback spectrerouge.com

Our fundamental position is for socialism and against identity politics and capitalism. Within that is plenty of theoretical discussion.

I look forward to anything you can slide our way

Do you have a list of the upcoming articles' topics?

I think I've got some skills in drawing, but no clue on how to do it digitally or even professionally IRL so I could make high quality scans, so sorry.

I doubt they were going insane. If they could only manage posting one every once in a while because there were too many, that would not compute with the fact that Bunkermag's been pretty ded and dry on the whole regardless.

Email, yes, and that would explain things.

But that's almost nothing, and quite frankly it hasn't done much to actually make it more than nothing and I thought the "debate" was really bad. Obviously the Bunkermag author actually has a good pair of brains but didn't really find any creative new angles to tackle the brainless Unruhe on. I might actually write an article on that (the whole "third worldism" meme, not just Unruhe who manages to make that joke into a real circus) for your new publication, if that's cool.

Also, if I have a piece of advice, it's gotta be to enforce a baseline political position or, if this goes against your principles, enforce it in general but make it very clear when an author/article is clearly not aligned with the website's chosen tendency.

One of the things that's biting back at Jacobin hard as of late is that they've always been social liberals with the rare communistic article, and thereby have created a line of expectation. First this meant threats to boycott them as AmeriKKKan agents of imperialism for saying that maybe Assad isn't amazing, racist secret MRA brocialists for saying that perhaps the real way to solve identitarian qualms starts with ending left call-out culture, etc., now it means actual boycotts and actual opposition that you can sense hurts Jacobin because it's more and more been shilling for donations, now more than ever.

If you ever want to go beyond the fringes of a shitposting website this is a good thing to start with, so to say, as you will have a healthy mag with healthy readers conditioned to know that your mag produces critical, often times properly provocative insights, like Viewpoint or The North Star.

I'll make a list from the correspondence I'm getting. It will take me a bit.

I took that picture of the charcoal drawing with my phone, so we'll take hand drawn stuff if it's high quality enough.

As for the editorial line, well, how about i create some positions and we vote on accept them or not. This would be the only vote on the topic, but I would like peoples feedback.

And yes, we would greatly appreciate a critique of third worldism

I've started writing something about the left's inability to criticize Islam today, I'd like to know whether there is something like that in the works already.

No, go ahead.

t-t-thanks

wot?

Perhaps I'm being too knee jerk, but I only see "why can leftists not criticize Islam?" from people like PJW talking about libfems and not actual leftists, when leftists in general have a full throated critique of all religions including Islam.

There is probably room for an article like that I just have some doubts based on the initial description.

The point I'm trying to make in the article is that these liberals attack genuine leftist critiques of Islam, lumping them in with the racists on the right. This prevents us from talking about genuine issues concerning Islam and immigration.
Hope that clears it up. Not sure if I'm actually gonna submit it, I'll have to see how it turns out.

I'm not but for me it sounds pretty good.

Sounds fine to me then. Probably would hinge on articulating well how our criticisms diverge from what the hypothetical right-racist one would be but I trust you could manage.

Bump

Bump

how often will you produce these
i need to know to see how much i could afford on the by edition basis.
i'm worried because you don't have any pledges on patreon :'(

going by bunkermag probably once a year, lol

We are going to aim for a quarterly schedule

Is Bunkermag officially discontinued now? Can I remove it from my RSS reader?

Yes, I think so.

I really want to contribute but I can't think of anything super substantial to write about. I study political science and philosophy with a focus on marxism and political economics so I have a really good understanding and background in this sort of stuff and could write 1500 words absolutely no problem. Are there any topics you guys want covered in particular?

Gonna go draw something for this. Also bump because this is a useful thread.

Well, think about the political, economic and philosophical issues facing us today. You could talk about the healthcare debates, the tack towards protectionism, the bipartisan attempts to repeal large parts of dodd-frank, a marxist understanding of the trump administration, or the democrats new "better deal" platform, ect.

Thanks fam, we appreciate it.

Did Rachel draw that mascot for you? Such a nice girl.

She did! It was very nice of her, and she will probably be providing the official logo as well as an article in our first edition.

Most people don't remember, but I helped to convince her to stay on with leftypol as a drawfag and continue the comic after she left initially. We've chatted a lot since then and she is without a doubt one of the most pleasant people I have ever encountered on the interwebs.

Nice reddit spacing, nerd.

She draws well.

Holla Forums fag here. I don't know how you're running this other than with wordpress, but if you have this running on a VPS and you can do simple shit like commands:
+ Try using something like pelican (docs.getpelican.com/en/stable/) or jekyll (jekyllrb.com/) to generate static web pages to lower your threat model ('cause the last thing you want to see is the site with bbc cuck porn on it from a Holla Forumsyps personal stash)
+ Add a free SSL cert with LetsEncrypt, 'cause user privacy
+ Do generic shit like pub/priv key authentication for ssh
Again, I don't know if you're running this on some webhost or by yourself on a vps, but if you're running it on a vps, try out the stuff above.

I'm really loving the aesthetic. Keep it the fuck up.

It's a webhost using wordpress. So far, my friend has been able to do a lot with it. When I purchased it it came with a back up service, so I'm not too concerned.

Thanks user. Have you checked out the site itself. We would really like any suggestions on how to improve it.

Alright, I don't know what your webhosts compatibility with let's encrypt is, but it may be worth a shot: community.letsencrypt.org/t/web-hosting-who-support-lets-encrypt/6920

I'll take a look!

Oh damn this looks good.
I happen to be relatively good at drawing/aesthetics, and I can also write the occasional article. I'd be happy to contribute!

Thank you user, we'd greatly appreciate it! Just email it to me when you're ready.

have a transparent png. might look nicer on your webpage.

Much appreciated.

I'm not gonna have a whole lot going on in like a month's time, so I've got a lot of time to write shit.
Been wanting an excuse to try writing something for a while.
