there's a big distinction between the military and the police. We have historical instances of the military joinining the left revolutionaries, while the same cannot be said of the police.

It's not really a surprise: the police exist to protect the state from its subejcts, the military instead is a much more flexible tool and it's this "flexibility" that allows for some freedom of thought… as strange as it sounds to say it… that transforms in having a often big chunck of the military leaning far left (and far right, it's not exclusive unfortunately).
