No. Many are, but not all.

Not necessarily. You can be a landlord to rich people or to corporations. Hell, thanks to the wonders of PFI you can be a landlord to the government.

Remember - if he sells those houses then another landlord will almost certainly buy them. If he gives them away, he will have saved but one or two families. (And the families who would otherwise have rented his property will still be exploited by somebody else.)
At the end of the day the lack of ethical consumption under capitalism broadly holds even with individual landlords, although I would strongly advocate going all cuddly-capitalism on tenants if it's the case so that the relationship is merely exploitative rather than arduous.

If you want a palliative, elect a social democrat to impose rent controls and build social housing. If you want the problem to go away, destroy capitalism. If I knew that someone's going to play porky owning a house, I'd sleep slightly better knowing the beneficiary of this systematic nightmare was a good person deep down.

You said they're elderly, but surely they are not too old to garden? If they can, try and kickstart a gardening co-op; maybe some of them might have financial issues, especially when it comes to food?

That is a good point. Landlordism will exist regardless, but that's not an excuse to benefit as a parasite from it.

Although this does raise an interesting question if you're a Socialist booj: do you make a market-rate profit from your property like anyone else but using those profits for advancing Socialism, or refuse to take any profits at all, allowing the workers/tenants to keep their stolen labor, or even giving the property away to the most needy and cooperatizing any business?

If this is OP, I'd keep the land, keep the houses. I don't really see you getting screwed with competition, since you are inheriting such an uncompetitive "business". Just don't be a predatory dick head.
I don't know though, I mean eventually your gonna want something, and you're gonna have all these tenants to profit off… You're going to have to be strong willed, especially with a wife and kids.
