What's a misconception? There is no objective truth as to wether or not a word like socialism which is extremly loaded and covers a huge variants of topics can be used to describe something.

Leftcoms do an appeal to philosophical authority but other people might define words more according to their contemporary discourse. For example, nobody would claim that social democrats are socialists because in the 19th century Social Democrats was a synonym for Marxists?
