I'm sick of people claiming it as some immutable part of humanity but it's hard to find anything good about it that's not right-wing propaganda.

Benedict Anderson's Imagined Communities is, to my knowledge, the best book-length treatment of this subject.

Ideologies aren't ideals?
Being an idealist doesn't mean you just hold ideals or lofty goals. It means that you believe reality or at least reality as we experience it is fundamentally constructed in the mind and that the material is merely an expression of certain ideal forces. Whereas materialism suggests that our thoughts and how we perceive reality is ultimately dependent on the physical conditions we happen to find ourselves in.

For a more specific case study, you could read Gérard Noiriel's fantastic Immigration, antisémitisme et racisme en France… that is if you understand French.
