By Sanders moving over to DSA it would also entail a massive growth of new, self-described democratic socialist (by Sanders standards); making an actually "socialist" (let's pretend) party (oxymoron) into a potential contender. Being an elected official biases you towards the immediate future, because of the two party system it would take forever to finally replace the Dems as the non-republican party during which time the Republicans would run roughshod over a lot of people's lives. It'd probably be faster but yeah a lot of people would suffer even more in the meantime, and that's the sort of thing even a radical starts caring about once elected.
