While reading about this, I was actually pleasantly surprised to learn NK has a fairly robust social welfare system and, while it definitely could use improvements, is fairly advanced for other countries of similar economic stature in the region. I retract my statement on this.

The UN reports on this are extensively documented. I know it's an international body, but UN reports tend to be extremely accurate and they are about as neutral and unbiased as you can get, even when they talk about major capitalist power players like the US and Israel.

I always like when people say accuse NK of too much "self-reliance" and then ignore the most extreme severity of sactions ever imposed on a country in modern history.

But this put this into context, NK had a famine in the mid 90s that was caused do to its excessive dependence on imports. Over 70% of their food and energy was being imported from China, and that number fell during a crisis there that resulted in the famine. Since that point NKp put serious emphasis on self-sustainability so as not to be faced with a famine again.
