Should work be compulsory?

Should work be compulsory?

fuck you

No. It should be encouraged though, and serve to reduce work in the long term (automation)

No, but it should be a right, and encoraged through education at least until automation is viable.
And

not compulsory

Work should be forbidden

You die if you work

Only for normies. We must forge an alliance of extremes between anime nazis, the anime left, and the slumbering hikki masses.

Imo in socialism non workers should get half labour vouchers and workers full vouchers amount, it's not worth it to try to force people, personally I would work.

What did he mean by this?

At least some work, allocated according to ability, should be compulsory for everyone. We should aim at full employment, shorter working hours and directed towards maximum automation so that the workload to be shared around decreases as fast as possible.
Once the basic needs of everyone are covered by the industrial behemoth we create labour should be a purely voluntary contribution.

This.

No.

We must become post-human. When every person is a god things like "work" doesn't matter anymore.

Anarkiddies pls.

People need some kind of incentive to work whether it's financial legal or social.

I may have gone a bit too far in some places.

But really, the last guy you said yes to had a more authoritarian solution than me, but that's okay because he said ultimately work should be eliminated, obviously I agree with that too

Kropotkin has some lovely words about this very thing. Consult The Conquest Of Bread.

The incentive to work is the product of your labor. Do people make cars for money or because they want cars? If we want them, we will continue to make them, and if we don't want them we shouldn't be making them in the first place.

No, not really. It's up to the reader's intention to interpret your words (in a positive or negative light). Currently, our civilizationary standards (medicine, logistics, electronics, etc.) require work. If post-rev we aim at a lower standard we'd be laughing-stock.

Making the political economy transparent (as opposed to viewed through the spooky "invisible hand of the market") is in itself a great boost in a sense, but I'm too pessimistic to say: "enough."

The problem with this term is that it's not concrete enough. While I agree with your sentiment I'm forced to think in actual ways to make this a reality, and to be honest I don't see how realistically it could be considered non-compulsory (in a sense), when the compulsion comes from the already mentioned civ. status. In other words: medicine needs to be produced, but ofc, work is shit. So I'd pull the card of re-positioning compulsion from a political sphere (muh totateritarian state) to civilizationary standards (muh internet is here)…

second meme-arrow meant to point at:

relevant, yet very Utopian

only in the special places for good little boys and girls

If you fags get to make work mandatory, then I get to make acts of terrorism mandatory.

Work should be unnecessary.

Its already coming. Computers and robots are coming for all the menial labor it didn't already sweep up. AI development is progressing at ludicrous speeds.
Technology is our savior. It is what will allow us to finally dump capitalism and even labor.

Yes, yes indeed, it is progressing (by its very nature). That isn't socialist in any sense of the word, though.

...

...

Yes, to an extent. Laziness can get to a point when it's gulag worthy

Not even an anarkiddie but Makhno has some interesting perspectives on this.

>Without question, this principle [From each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs] is the cornerstone of anarchist communism. […] However [in the early days of the social revolution] new classes will immediately arise and these, seeing the revolution supply the needs of every person, would rather idle than work. The best measure [against this] would be to put the counter-revolutionary, non-working classes usefully to work. In one sphere or another, to one extent or another, these classes will have to find themselves useful employment of which society has need; and it is their very right to their share in society's output that will force them to do so, for there are no rights that do not carry obligations [emphasis mine]. That is the very point that our splendid anarchist principle is making. It proposes that every individual in proportion to their needs, provided that every individual places their powers and faculties in the service of society and not that he serve it not at all.

tbh every argument i see for compulsory work is based on the theory that NOT working is somehow leeching off of people who do

and the more i think about it the less i accept this theory at face value

it's easy to say this in respect to capitalists who require a very large amount of money to sustain, but as a society we can support (a very large number) of individuals who do not produce any tangible goods through sheer automation of the production of food and other goods and the liberation of capital from capitalists, no?

...

Doesn't need to be. Should be automated.

This. After which the population of undesirables would be downsized. No one important. Just people who dont agree with the mainstream. Independent thinkers and such

I'm unemployed, having recently finished university

Would have no problems working in a socialist society, since I assume we'd have full employment and shared workload; there's just no fucking jobs here. I like doing work outdoors, helping out family etc.

What specifically is and is not work is not well defined. Art, philosophy, religious preaching, blogging, raising children, curating a museum of trinkets, etc. could all have disagreements on whether or not that should count as work. Ultimately, in a non-capitalist economic system, work would be the result of people being motivated enough to do the work or motivated enough to force others to do the work. I think work not being compulsory would drive the most generally useful work to get done instead of whatever work is most useful to the ones doing the compulsion.

Post-revolution, there would likely be an emergency situation where some work is desperately needed, and at that time work should be compulsory. But the goal of any socialist revolution should be for work to not be compulsory, otherwise you make everyone a servant of the political system, which isn't much better than being a servant of capital. I would treat compelling desperately needed work like an army-draft at wartime, something that shouldn't be done regularly and that should require very high levels of support to be legitimized.

Just posting what every leftist should read to not fall under work fetish.
