I believe this kind of people tend to be more attracted to "extreme ideologies" (I don't like that term because neoliberalism is pretty extreme too) than others in general, because the current system doesn't work for them.
A more interesting question is : why are they attracted to the right-wing rather than the left ? Indeed it doesn't make much sense at first glance because they want a harsher system where they would be bigger losers more than they already are.
There is a number of factors at play :
- The failure of M-L states and the end of Cold War undermined the main leftist alternative to the American neoliberal hegemony. I won't cry them though, we have to find something new
- A shitload of leftists fell for the intersectionality/idpol meme in a very vulgar and simple-minded way, which is very unappealing for white proles (aka the majority of people living in the West)

- The average 20-year old nowadays don't have a grandparent who fought against Nazis or lived during the occupation.

Genuine fascists are a rarity. If you read the American Blackshirt's writings, you'll find it to be a bit if fresh air compared to the American (and yes it is an American phenomenon) "Fascists". Most of the edgy insincere right have no even read giovani gentile. Instead, they call Hitler a fascist (which is absurd, the main theorists behind Fascism named Sergio Panunzio left the fascists when it became racial.) They praise capitalism and are more afraid of communism and socialism than anything else. This is unlike the geniune fascists and national syndicalists who very well understand that capitalism is the dominant system. Fascism is also not rooted in biological racialism.

What needs to be said is that the majority of the alt right, has now been reduced to being image based. It wants to be seen edgy instead of actually being sincere about their beliefs.
