Getting into philosophy is a good idea. I don't just say that because I'm a phil major, but most socialist theory is based in philosophy. Philosophers and philosophy have always played a large role in socialism.

If I were to give recommendations here's what they'd be:

You're 19, so still in school. If you have electives, take em in philosophy. Why not? Do you really need that burner credit in "classical music theory"?
Read Kant. Preferably with a prof, if not the Bernstein Tapes work well. Then read Hegel. The Phenomenology of Spirit and the Science of Logic if you plan on going full ham all the way.

Then Capital. Obviously you don't need all that background to get Capital but it helps considerably with Marx's dialectical method and understanding why he makes certain of the moves that he makes.

I actually can't take electives because I'm doing Physics but otherwise I really would. I took philosophy at A level but it teaches you fuck all.

My plan is to read The Discourse, then the Prolegomena, then as much of Logic as I can without killing myself, then Capital.

Prolegomena seems appealing but in all honesty just read the 1st Critique. Everything you need to get a grasp of Hegel is in the 1st Critique.

Sucks that Uni degrees in the U.K. are so restricted. Although I did my Master's in London, my Bachelor's was in Canada. I never would have done philosophy were it not for electives I got during my Bachelor's.
