I understand where you're coming from with wealth being tied to problem-solving ability, but society isn't like high school physics, where you have a frictionless ball on a never-ending horizontal plane. That's to say that due to the accumulation of land, wealth, and property of the rich, the playing field isn't even as you assume it to be. Also, your comment on profit motive driving innovation, I think most people here would show how the inventors and designers of companies are rarely the richest or most well-promoted. Wealth is more of a power structure thing rather than skill based, the influence-worthy kind of wealth that matters, not upper-crust suburban family with 4 cars. Most wealthy people today, and probably throughout history, are not innovators, but owners.

What makes you think the playing field for society is so even? Most people, especially the poor who are often in debt or have a large family to support, don't have the luxury you did of having no responsibilities that allowed you to move out to the woods. You also avoided paying taxes and therefore missed out on the coercion analogue in your anecdote. No one was breathing down your neck out in the woods for property taxes or anything, no one was applying force to coerce you into or out of that situation. But how would you pay property taxes? Or rent? Government monopolization of force makes escaping the system only temporary. But even then, you said it was enjoyable. Why not strive to help erode entrenched property norms like many on this board do? It's the ultimate way of leveling the playing field.
