They absolutely are. Do you think anybody ever sat down and said "wow I wish I had some random bullshit that will become a meme and waste everybody's time and money?" You can get the same result by sticking a pencil in the hole in a ruler and swinging it around.

They would have to aquire production time in the local multiuse factory for their silly toys. But that would be a truly creative endavour instead of an advertising pushed hype producing new landfills of waste.
