you should study the idea of martial arts first.
First there's the reason, the personal need for knowledge of self-defense, then there are the various arts; karate is mostly disciplinary, if you go into karate you can expect a military structure and reward levels based on your competence and adhering to a move set like you are putting together a model plane; everything must be perfect.

Jiu Jitsu and Aikido are different, focusing more on defensive arts, tackling and grabbing.

Wing Chun is my favourite overall because of its focus on focusing, and seeing/anticipating moves, and controlling the opponent while retaliating with short and focused strikes.

Or you can go all Krav Maga or Navy Seals and just utterly destroy peoples' bodies in highly aggressive warfare situations.
