Why is it so important tankies that leftists should support oppressive regimes like the DPRK? Why is that oppressive regimes, by some mystical Tankie magic, become good and anti-imperialist once you cross the imaginary line that separates North America and Western Europe from the rest of the world? First off the Assadist strain of Ba'athism is secular in nature, supports both minority rights and a welfare state amongst the shithole that is the Middle East. Would you support the French Revolution against the monarchist reaction?
Secondly, and more importantly, Assad is clearly anti-imperialist which means he is opposed to the current global capitalist order which sustains itself through access to oil price manipulation and petrodollar recycling.

Quite simply, regimes which oppose to the US are conductive to the foreign policy interests of the USSR and its struggle to gain influence. Except the USSR is gone now, so tankie geopolitics don't really make much sense anymore and are more like a sad conditioned reflex than anything else.
