On the surface level, things appeared to be working for a long time. Japan experienced tremendous GDP growth between the end of WW2 and 1990. Even now, there's still plenty of accumulated social capital to at least create the appearance of functioning capitalism.

Were one to look deeper though I'd suspect you'd find the same sort of processes that happened in the US happened in Japan, meaning, intense scrutiny and disruption from governmental and judicial forces. Radicals get sent to jail or otherwise discredited, if not murdered outright. Bourgeois propaganda does alot of the leg work. Couple that with a bourgeois government actively working to thwart any sort of leftist reforms and you create the image of a neutered, ineffective Left.

Why Japanese youth don't seem to be looking for alternatives to capitalism is beyond me. They've experienced intense stagnation for decades and even now their economy is only barely chugging along. Maybe their social programs defuse the situation somewhat, but I can't even begin to speculate on that. They're drifting towards disaster just like everyone else though, so I guess we'll see.

I swear that the Japanese haven't mentally progressed from their nationalistic feudal age. They are like peasants and lords in a capitalist country. Hierarchy is a major part of their life from start to finish. They see themselves are part of something bigger, instead of considering themselves as individuals. Failure is entirely your own fault. The immense pressure from not only society but also from family, causes many young people to fall into depression. There are some Japanese shows which deal with this aspect. But the real proof of their country being shit is the absurd amount of wish fulfillment. They have to imagine another world to escape their horrible lives. No matter how shit other first world countries can be, you should never wish to live in Japan.

My point was never that they were at fault for this. They were plunged into it without being able to adapt properly on a social basis. This isn't surprising. The conception of capitalism in the west was closely linked to civil rights movements. We are selfish and materialists. Capitalists and socialists alike. Even idpol and lifestylism is based on materialistic views. Japan was different. Spiritualism was still going strong compared to the fading faith of the west. Honor and hierarchy were the important tenets of social life. Brutal fighters with disregard for their own safety and willing to accept any fault as their own. Buddhism only helped to cement this. Especially when Zen-Buddhism formed. Capitalism in itself as a very violent system. It naturally creates division and hierarchy. This violence leads to movements resisting against this. Japan was on the other hand made for capitalism. A people almost totally willing to submit themselves. First in the form of the empire, willing to slaughter any nation they could reach, suing capitalist imperialism as their engine. And later as totally embracing of neoliberal consequences implemented by the Americans.

This is going to be very facile but I believe the major elements of the precapitalist superstructure are still maintained as the accepted sociocultural values. I am currently reading The German Ideology and Marx briefly touches on the superstructure as the values that the ruling class determines to be the best for their own aims, and it's fairly passable that they have maintained a similar superstructure for a long time.

Socialism has been passed into the suconcious as "North Korea", escapism is too damn high, society doesn't promote thinking and politics has lost its conection with the youth, cause it's done by people that don't even know how to YT.
