I also wanted to add that amphetamine use was pretty accepted from the 30s till the 60-70s, you could buy them over the counter at the time. Hell, Japan even promoted meth to civilians after the WWII because they were siting on a huge stock of it and needed to rebuild the country. They decided to ban it after people were getting crazy regularly.
It's only recently that the American military replaced amphetamines with modafinil as a stimulant. And don't forget a ton of kids in the USA are taking Adderall everyday, after all.
