Shit being cheaper out in rural areas doesn't really mean shit because there aren't any jobs and the few that exist are part-time minimum wage bullshit. I live in North Carolina. I know shit is cheaper out in the country, and I'd move there if there were actually any jobs out there, but there aren't. Maybe the cheap prices ease the poverty a bit, but minimum wage is abject poverty no matter how you slice it.

The "official" unemployment rate is literally just measuring how many people get unemployment benefits, it's not actually indicative of the employment situation in a given area, especially considering that most red states make it harder to get unemployment.

There are 160 million people in the labor force, of which 5.4% are unemployed, totaling roughly 9 million unemployed.

That count is imperfect in the sense that it does not consider people who are working part-time but want to find full-time work. 5.5 million people fall into this category.
