This entire thing has been spectacularly entertaining, and perhaps points towards a fundamental characteristic of contemporary capitalist society. Not sure if I can put it into words though.

It's that it depends more and more on selling air. "Pop up", "boutique", "experience", these are the watchwords of upscale consumption. They all have in common that the use value of all the commodities acquired in these venues is obviously incommensurate with the price paid - and that's the point, of course, they are the service equivalent of Veblen goods.

In this case, however, the gap between the actual value of what was promised, what was implied, what was socially expected; and the actual material reality of what was offered, was so great as to push things to a crisis point.

But really, the complaint can be made for almost any good or service in the modern economy that comes with a marque mark-up. Why not create a riot in the local Starcucks? What they charge for a coffee is often no less outrageous than this festival, but people have been socially conditioned to accept it - so they do.

What else is one to do when the rate of profit for actual production keeps shrinking? You sell air, you create a monopoly of sorts via marques. You sell air. This is where we are now.

I must have missed this last night but it's pretty hilarious. I've already seen people defending these porkies though which I can't see how anyone can do.

It's not even a rave, it was a scam from the start. This would be the first year, they advertised it as taking place in an island that doesn't even exist called Fyre Cay, promised scuba diving, cabanas and bikini models and charged outrageous prices.

Initial reports were talking about roving gangs of native thugs stealing their gadgets and a bar being plundered and tents on fire and even pack of feral dogs, but alas, it seems those were just trolls on /r/fyrefestival.
