It used to be full of college libertarians, if you can believe in it. In fact, I believe that's how the fedora meme started. But Helldump and later LF (read on) changed it by mocking anything "goony".

Anyway, in 2007 I think, Lowtax created a FYAD-lite for D&D, Laissez's Fair. Up until some point in 2009, it was honestly the best thing SA ever had, and the 3rd most popular board. But quality decayed as the 2008 elections passed (it provided a lot of great material) as well as usual community decay: good members drift away, shitposters persist, parallel communities leech posters etc.

But the probably worst part is that Fragmaster, who liked LF, stepped down as head admin and docevil a.k.a. @fart took his place, and boy did he hate LF for stealing the thunder from his FYAD circlejerk. It was the biggest case of e-penis envy I ever saw. He didn't flat-out delete LF because not even head admins could do that, it's Lowtax's prerogative, so he did everything he could to shit it up (ban everyone that posted in a random thread, make the forum not appear on the index, fuck with the stylesheet etc.), and effectively killed a walking dead. By the time it was closed down in 2010 it was mercy-killing, really.

(As an aside, docevil was soon to be laughed out of his precious FYAD clubhouse after being publicly emasculated by Guy Fieri, the singer from Smash Mouth and a guy in a shark costume. ED has the details. He has kept strictly to Twitter ever since.)

So some old LFers spread accross at least 3 different off-site forums and seem to have remained lowkey, some took to Twitter and are part of the "ironic" Maoism anime brigade, and some stayed on SA. Arguably, SA got the worst lot, the supposed first SJWs. I can't deny LF had its share of proto-SJWs, but it was much closer to Holla Forums than to Tumblr or Twitter, that much I guarantee. So blaming their SA infestation on LF or its deletion isn't right, but is not altogether wrong. It might have had a kickstarter effect: a handful of proto-SJWs got into libertarians' vacuum as the face of goondom, so proto-SJWs from the rest of the internet flocked because that's what those mentally ill gregarious hipster bastards do.

So no, I don't think there was any co-optation – not on purpose at least. Planets aligned and caused it to become a SJW haven. That said, I have no doubt it attracted the attention of shills from the dark corners of the DNC's NEET basement.

I'm honestly worried by FYAD's presence in real journalism. They were absolute nobodies who wasted their days writing elaborate trolls and ironic shitposts for the sake of his few dozen fellow posters, then clickbait journalism explodes, and suddenly their niche "skills" makes them valuable to view-starved nu-news media.

And I have absolutely no doubt that there's cronyism going on too. You might have seen this pundit, Jeb Lund a.k.a. @mobute, clutching pearls about how can Republicans be so wacist abloo bloo on national television. You know where he was a decade ago? He was Boniface, king of Helldump, a semi-NEET who wasted his days writing about wrestling (and not the Greco-Roman kind), bullying kids on the internet and cracking niggerdeath jokes. And you want to tell me got from this to MSNBC and Guardian paragon of virtue in less than a decade without help from FYAD journalist friends? Like fuck.

Also, I'd heard that both the failure of Ron Paul and some kind of forum-wide bet involving Romney resulted in a mass purge of lolberts and other rightists, causing the amount of smug cancer among SA's leftists to skyrocket.

You see, the thing with FYAD, Helldump and now Weird Twitter is that they were always horrible people."Sociopath" is way too strong a word for (most of) them, but they never gave a shit about how "evil" their target was, they always did it for the amusement of their circlejerk. It's just recently, with the rise of this socjus zeitgeist, they started applying this thin veneer of "bullying the bullies", "no bad tactics only bad targets" etc. to it, and of course, they didn't do this out of any pangs of guilt, but simply to rationalize and disguise their continued anti-social behavior. Well I suppose some of them might have actually felt guilty, but socjus still gave them the self-righteousness they needed to keep doing their shit.

(One caveat here: FYAD, Helldump and Weird Twitter are not synonymous, of course. There were cool people in all of them. But the three cores share a big overlap. It's always the popular kids, you know?)

Regardless, they kept on doing their thing, in SA of old and, once it went downhill, in Twitter, Reddit and possibly elsewhere. You know that Twitter tactic of dogpiling on anyone one of your friends retweets, but the moment you start seeing strangers in your feed you cry muh harassment? Weird Twitter were the pioneers, and SJWs adopted it with gusto, as GG has shown.

Now moving on. If you're on Holla Forums, I guess I don't need to tell you to disregard the "cultural Marxism" nonsense. If you want to know the origins of socjus thought, read the intro to How to Make a Social Justice Warrior. Most of the book is boring, but the intro perfectly sums up the dual origins (Peggy McIntosh and critical race theory) of that plague, and neither had anything to do with socialism.

Due to the annoying persistence of Paul supporters in the last days of the college libertarian era, he ended up becoming a running joke on Helldump and LF. This constant mockery probably was part of why they left, come to think of it. But no, they were not purged.

Pretty much the only thing on that checklist that prevents SJWs from sweeping it 100% is the lack of a single individual leader of any significance, and IRL everyday physical exploitation (probably the closest I've seen would be a few smaller splinter orgs, like the Swedish feminazi group ROKS, or certain US antifa LARPer cells /cow/ has linked firsthand accounts of). I dearly hope there's something inherently fractious and juvenile about SJWs, or else some sort of charismatic con-artist could put them under their thumb and really destroy a lot of lives.

Also, to say it had nothing to do with socialism isn't entirely true. Postmodernism and critical theory emerged from the same roots as socialism and crosspollinated (contaminated) throughout each others' history (though there was a notable uptick in cancerousness when genuine leftists exited the culture wars in the 1970s following their resounding 1960s victories). What I wonder about is why it stewed safely inside academic humanities departments with only minor spillover to corporate HR/PR for decades, then suddenly exploded online in the late 2000s.

SA seems like the key to answering that question.

The actual split was critical theory (which wasn't even necessarily associated with politics) and postmodern critical theory. Remember critical race theory wasn't alone, there's also women's/queer/etc studies, postcolonial studies, literary/film/etc theory, and an endless parade of similar puff. Combining dry philosophical analysis of culture with fiery political invective is something that only could've happened through the profoundly anti-intellectual flimflam of postmodernism.

FYAD is like the illuminati but real, pulling the strings behind all world events.
