I think a lot of people in this thread have posited more or less accurate theories about the origin of what we think of as the modern SJW, but I want to add in the fact that the iPhone came out about exactly ten years ago now, this is about the same time that the internet was being rolled out to more rural communities, and that internet culture started becoming much more corporate friendly back around the same time. This, coinciding with Obama's election and a the cultural specter of 'hope and change' gave us an environment where these like-minded individuals could form communities.

The influx of new users (and likely also younger users, because the technology was becoming cheaper and more prolific) to the internet caused a social shift in online discussions.

I think that the genesis of SJWs are essentially just liberal-leaning normies + internet coming into an existing internet culture that had already more or less adapted to trolling.

Then Gamergate was a stratifying thing for some reason, and that plus Trump drama has brought in even more uninitiated internet users that don't want to have their strongly held opinions about the world questioned.

So I guess to answer the original question, the SJWs themselves were already around, they just had to wait for insular communities to form and for certain political events and climates to be in place to really explode.

Humans weren't sufficiently technologically advanced to be a contributing factor in the warming back then, comrade. I think we can all agree that it would be better for us as a species if we try to maintain the current climate that we (and our crops and our animals, etc.) have adapted to, in addition to being able to monitor the climate (and the state of our planet more generally) in enough detail to know where and how we'll have to adapt to changing climate and ecosystems.
