When this is understood, we can see clearly that gender is a culturally specific phenomenon, that varies in form across time and place. For example, consider the Indian Hijra, or the North American native two-spirits (i.e. "beardache", as the crude earlier anthropologists called them).

What I think is the most important question, is how we conceptualise gender in a way that makes concrete equality and has respect for diversity.

This isn't true though, as our understanding of gender is determined by the existence of sex. Genders, and gender roles, especially in tribal communities, are largely determined by the facts of sex: who can get pregnant, who can't, etc.

Contrary to the subjectivism of post-modernists, gender is not a purely subjective thing. It is culturally quantified, and is in essence the roles and attributes that we apply to people based on their sex.

Gender has real implications in that if monogender aliens adopted a bunch of human babies and raised them totally isolated from society the kids would inevitable grow up and have new concepts of gender. Questions of attraction, physical ability, and getting flooded with psychoactive chemicals at puberty are all very real things. And then there are questions of neurological gender (since what the science actually fucking shows is that men and women have dimorphic brain structures, and while its not 100% people who have the opposite genders brain structures end up with gender dysphoria, which strongly implies that normally brained people would undergo something similar in the absence of social definition of gender).

But they're not going to have a concept of human races if they're pulled from earth without regard for who their parents are. Skin color would be no more notable to them than hair color is to us. They might develop something liek a concept of Humans from the North and Humans from the south, or which alien language they speak, or something like that, but it'll have nothing at all to do with genetics, it's human nature to form ingroups and outgroups, but the construction of those groups is entirely coincidental.
