Catch rate is ~1/3

If you have mean look, that can lock it into the battle, and let you weaken it.

Paralysis is a 1/3 chance of it being unable to act, and also a 2x modifier on the catch rate.
Confusion is another 1/3 chance of it being unable to act, but that'll cause it to damage itself.

I've only barely played the first few moments of leaf green and pokemon go both seemed like if the ball shook 3 times you caught it. why is it not the same in this one? why bother letting the ball shake at all

It's used the same formula since Gen3, IIRC.

Para only halves speed, and confuse got nerfed.
I dunno if para is still 25$ or if that was incresed, but given the nerf I wouldn't question it.

25% and 33% are very different. Pokemon is a risk management game, 8.33% additional risk needs to be taken into consideration.

On single number rng, 33 will proc about 5 more times in 100 than 25.
On dual number proc, 33 will basically never proc.

The shaking of the pokeball is based on how close your roll was to the catch chance I believe, and adds both suspense/excitement and gives you an idea of how close you are.

Actually, Gen 1 shake mechanics had nothing to do with your roll, and it was determined by your modified catch rate.

Which meant that the same pokemon with the same hp, and the same condition, would always shake the exact same number of times.

And if it ever shook more than that, then it was a guaranteed capture.

that's a fair amount of time and work for something completely pointless

so in other words it is pointless af, it's literally in there to artificially extend the time of playing. it would be like playing rock paper scissors through a hole in the wall but the first three choices they show you were not specifically the real one

Shinies, color variations, sprites, tiles, animations etc. also serve no purpose by that logic. The point is to make a fun game, the suspense added by the pokeball shaking is iconic and fun to many.

no shinies and color variations are a visible difference that are also rare so they matter in terms of collecting, you could sell the point as "capture rare shiny versions of your pokemon" you however can not sell "watch an animated ball shake for teen seconds every time you try to capture a pokemon for no real reason aside from we want this to take longer"

when I believed 3 shakes meant something, now it does not so watching it shake serves no purpose. regardless of how much it shakes the end result is already done and the same. you aren't learning anything useful from the shaking, it's not confirming or denying anything it's just there to take up space

Suspense, drama and mystery are exciting to people. Not knowing instantly whether or not you've caught the pokemon and watching the ball shake gives that to some people.

It's the same as open loot boxes in any modern game: there's a long animation to draw out suspense and make the anticipation/disappointment more rewarding.
It's literally the same as a "gambler's high": using your anticipation for your desired outcome to not discourage you from failure.

You can press a button that then instantly tells you whether you won or lost with a plain text output. That's not as fun.

The shaking does serve a purpose.

It gives you an approximation of how close you are to catching any given Pokemon.

Since the game generates a modified catch rate, and rolls numbers against that to determine if you pass or fail a shake, you can use how often you get to x number of shakes to get an idea of whether you need to weaken it more, or just keep trying.

Use that as your sales pitch and you're selling at a loss.

whatever, if all of you like time waiting stuff in games that serves no point but to draw out the most boring part all the power to you. to me it's thee worst part of the game as not only did it waste time to begin with but no it wastes time and serves zero actual purpose

That is literally what it is and why every game based on chance draws out suspense and makes you feel like your were close.

What you said, and what I said, are two different things.
Your roll doesn't matter to the number of shakes.
Your modified catch rate does.

A higher MCR results in more rolls passing, on average, which tells you something.
No particular roll being close to your MCR has anything, at all, ever to do with your shake checks, nor has it ever.

Random numbers are random, even if they're comparing against a more lenient number.

Take the average rather than the flat data.
