I'm not gonna pretend the North is in any way competent, but their are plenty of reasons as to why the US hasn't tried invading since the Korean War. The DPRK could wreak havoc on East Asia (don't they have a ton of antique mortars pointed at Seoul) before being occupied, and that's before we get into the countless refugees that an invasion would result in, something neither China nor the south want.
This is before we even consider the long, bloody, protracted guerrilla war that would likely occur, given how much of the country is military trained.

It props up NK as a means of keeping the balance of power in the region in their favor, as well as a proxy for various illegal activities, but NK isn't exactly a wet firecracker.

It's ground-based military anyway might be a paper tiger, but that's why they've been dumping what resources they have into submarines and short range ballistic missiles. Submarines still seriously threaten the American navy, and if the navy can't operate with near impunity, the Americans don't feel confident in making a direct move.

That's just one of the downsides for all that expensive space age american hardware. As far as the price tag goes at least, losing one or two planes or ships or whatever is bad, but that's the nature of warfare. If they're made to endure significant losses, the dollar-loss very quickly ramps up into the tens or hundreds of billions of dollars. Even for America, that kind of thing can be hard to swallow, especially if it's one of their shiny new Ford-class supercarriers, if they can get the piece of shit to work.

It costs more than half the goddamn planet and half again as much to maintain. Every inch of it has a computer attached to it that is in real-time contact with every other computer inside it. It runs on jet fuel. Just drive it into town, and everyone else will be instantly humbled. Just remember that it requires constant upkeep by the most talented people in the business, because if it doesn't get that upkeep… if everything isn't in sync… then it quickly starts to turn into an over-priced hunk of aviation-grade aluminum and carbon fibre.

That is completely untrue. They are not even in the same category of aircraft. The F-22 is a dedicated air superiority fighter. The F/A-18 is a carrier-based strike fighter. The F/A-18 has always been a poor air superiority fighter, and it has only been used as such due to the cost of maintaining both it and the F-14, which is still a superior fighter. The F/A-18 is as agile as an air superiority fighter should be, but it has a significant radar profile, and its engines emit a shitton of infrared radiation. You really do not want something like the F/A-18 to be trading AA missiles with other fighters. You want something like the F-22 with its tiny radar signature and shielded engines.
