These people who have been stuck working in replaced jobs could go back to school and explore their original interests. Another thing is, considering how we're tending towards post-scarcity through automation, and as such I think we could reasonably expect our definition for what we "deserve" to change somewhat.

That said, there is a point to be made that in such a hypothetical situation, the couch potatoes you're describing are probably not going to have much children to begin with naturally, possibly reducing the "need" for an officialized eugenics program. Worse case scenario just enlist them in the army

My father was the last one to really participate in that tradition in the later 60s-early 70s. None of his siblings or cousins had the chance to learn because their parents were working night-and-day in Rust Belt auto factories.

There is no contradiction there. The Church implemented the first eugenics program to prevent inbreeding and this shit lasted at least 400 years in my country and the results are that there are no isolated genetic pockets and the native population is virtually 100% homogeneous.

Expanding into space will be extremely resource intensive so having less people, but spending more on each of them in terms of bringing out their fullest potential while reserving critical resources for actually getting into space can only be a good thing. Now of course once in space resources will become virtually limitless.

Automation and (actual) AI will be good for a chance of a revolution but by then porky will have no problem killing most of the world, so it's kinda terrifying, really.
