It's hard to build on perfection, honestly.
So long as there's a vast array of furniture, outfits and villagers, that's good enough for me. Importing textures from QR codes was pretty amazing in New Leaf though.

One that doesn't have some other mandatory bullshit would be nice, also a boobs/ara resident.

It feels like an empty experience to play this game, and the residents can't communicate back to you properly, or you have to have really specific writing. I'm bored of the same formula of "socializing" that the game follows. As far as spending hours socializing with virtual nothingness.

I'd like to see vastly improved Villager interactions. Every villager pretty much says the same thing with no variation between species/personality types.

maybe some kind of roommate system that lets you share your house/room with one of the villagers

this would have the obvious perk of freeing up a space for another villager in your town and other bonuses like maybe your roomate paying a bit of rent every now and then or some kind of events. Doing so would require your house to be expanded a certain amount and giving the village you want rooming with you that has high enough friendship with you a certain item, like maybe a House Key or so.

Also being able to hang out with Villagers like how Pocket camp does (eating together, etc). And maybe add something like Cooking.

and goes without saying you can have villagers of either gender become your Roommate

There should be some kind of social area where you could take villagers/visitors to the cinema, amusement park, dinner and an arcade with old NES games.
Also I would like to see some kind of minigame where you could take villagers with maximum friendship to a forest/cave exploration adventure and get some exclusive furniture or bells at the end

More house expansions, both in actual amount and in variety, such as making rectangular rooms.
Or like a foyer with a staircase in the centre
Basically I want to be able to make huge mansions.

More town customization.

Way more variety in villager personality. Seriously we are 4 games in, (5 games if you count N64 & Gamecube separately, not including spinoffs) and theres only 4 personality types per gender.

Bring back game consoles.

Animal crossing with dating already exists but only the first game made it out of Japan.
Like other people have said, better villager interactions would be good. It's been a long time since I played the gamecube game, but I remember the dialogue and requests being a bit more interesting. I could be remembering wrong, though.

NoA/Treehouse not being salty bitches during the translation
some way to keep villagers in your town without having to log in every day to stop them
less randomization when getting building projects
more interactivity with villagers and holidays
multiplayer activities
It's hard to sum up in bullet points. Without going into specifics, I just want to feel more immersed in my little town. There doesn't need to be a mission structure, but something to "do" every day that keeps me coming back aside from being a grounds keeper of the town. Maybe in the mornings there can be some jogging contest or place to work out with villagers. A way to organize single or multiplayer fishing contests. Something that doesn't make me feel like playing an MMO with dailies.

an arcade with old NES games
It's time to accept the fact that we are never gonna get an new AC with NES games in it again (or any Nintendo modern remake with the original release included).
With the release of VC in 2006, Nintendo knows they can get people to buy (some of) the older games. Before 2006, the bonus "retro" game was a nice bonus feature in those early 2000's era game because it had been so long since the 80's since those original games had been released. Eg: Excitebike 64 with NES Excitebike, Metroid Zero Mission with the original Metroid, GCN Zelda collection disk, the GBA NES game classic series re-releases.

One thing that has to be brought up about AC is that it did include a lot of the "lower tier" NES games like Tennis/Donkey Kong/etc that didn't have much replay value to them and were a rip off when they were at the same price as other NES games on the Wii Shop Channel (which no one wanted to buy). Personally a good substitute would be either:
Your personal purchased Switch VC library accessible and playable in the next AC
Have the Game & Watch games for free because the only way to get them is through DSiWare (overpriced) on the 3DS's eShop, and no one is buying/playing them otherwise.

Cooper Nelson

They really should expand on interacting with villagers. There should be at least 5 options when you go up to talk to them. Could be standard chat, ask them to do something, ask them if they want you to do anything, give them a gift, and "Oops I didn't mean to talk to you, bye"
I guess you're right, it isn't canon unless that was also in the Japanese version of the Direct.

Animal Crossing needs to take some pointers from Ever Oasis and Stardew Valley in terms of adding stuff to DO in your comfy small town life simulator. I want minigames in the form of interactive furniture.
Say you have a pool table in your room. Instead of it being just a big rectangle taking up space in your room, give it the ability to activate a minigame. The user walks up to the table and presses "A" on it activating a prompt on the screen asking
"Play Billiards minigame?"
Yes
Later
Choosing Yes would begin a Wii Play(embed related)-like, bare-bones, billiards minigame either by yourself or with whomever is in the room with you be it a neighbor cpu player or human player visiting your town.
Though, this would inevitably end in everyone having a game-room in their house full of pool tables, ping pong tables, pinball machines and such. Perhaps an arcade building would be better instead with it's own new character/merchant.

Better drawing, using the stylus for it sucks I'd rather do one at a time.
More use for patterns and no limit on how many you have. Things like making wallpaper/floors, proper wall paintings, etc.
Easier placement of furniture and town structures.
Able to place designs on the ground more easily, like select one, hold a button, and move on a grid to place them instead of one by one.
Able to make roads outside of designs to save your grass and help you move just a little bit faster so you don't cut corners.
Choosing your town region, which would determine the events you get. Like if you choose japan as your town region you'll get all the japanese events instead of american or european ones.
Online mail
Dedicated minigames. Something like a boardwalk out of town where you can play some minigames for prizes like plushies, a secondary currency, take villagers to build friendship, etc.

-actually being able to choose where villager homes go
It's so stupid how they can just plop their houses down anywhere in a town that you are supposed to be the mayor of. I made a fruit orchid and some asshole built his house right in the middle of it.

-bring back NES games but make them all animal crossing related parodies
NES games were kind cool, but they were ugly filling up the house. If that do that they should at least just make it one system as furniture that you can collect carts for, like music.

-make it easier to prevent grass deterioration
It's already easy in New Leaf. So much so that when I was deliberately trying to make a path it kept going away when it snowed.

-make it so you can get town projects easier without a daily cap
They should just get rid of the mayor mechanic.

For a slightly more serious suggestion that no one seems to have mentioned:
A more balanced economy - make villager requests actually profitable, give other options to make money and most importantly actually balance furniture costs with renovation/public work costs so that a single piece of furniture isn't such a minute expense that it's effectively negligible.
ACGC did part of this well, mostly due to the scale of the house repayments being way lower, meaning that buying a piece of furniture was a decision to make on whether you'd rather the funds go to repaying your loan instead of just working out it if you've got the item in your catalogue yet or not.
Or at the very least just don't make it so the most profitable bugs and fish are all restricted to single half acre sized circle where there are no NPCs

content of NL
dialogue, atmosphere, and overhead camera angle from GC seriously fuck that rolling log style
There, now we have a great game, but we can add more.

ability to set plots or areas where houses can go
more interaction between villagers and each other or the town (ie, they actually help donate to projects)
multiplayer game modes like hide and seek, tag, etc
NES/arcade titles, 2P support depending on the game like with GC (I'd even be happy with just a working pinball machine because I played that most, but that's just me)
not playing for a couple months doesn't ruin the town and make your favorite villager leave
The beautiful town ordinance helped a bit with the last one, but I'm sick of loading up an old save to find X villager moved when it's usually one of the villagers I wanted to stay. Conversely, there's villagers I want to move out that just never leave.

That's probably what I miss the most from GC. There's supposedly more personality types in NL, but they all feel the same and too friendly. (Especially snooty dialogue in NL feels way off.) Even though villagers within a personality had similar dialogue in GC, at least the dialogue fit the personality and was different than another villager's dialogue of a different personality. It gave a better sense of variety that way.

sneak into other peoples' houses while they're asleep and burglarize them then sell it to Red.
You can get caught by the cops and will have to go to court and face a prison sentence that will lock you out of the game for a set number of days.
Villagers can also sue you if you commit torts.
You also have a reputation meter and, if it gets low enough: you'll become a pariah and never be able to mend fences, forcing you to move to another town.
It's not guaranteed that villagers from your old town won't move into your new one and tell your new neighbors about your past.

Also: the ability to have affairs with Isabelle!

If you get caught: both of your reputations will be tarnished and Isabelle will be ejected from her position as secretary and replaced by a more homely-looking old hag. She will continue to live in your town as a normal villager but other townies will boo and chuck garbage at Isabelle when they see her.

I'd like it if they actually made instruments playable. If you buy a guitar/xylophone/bongo drum form the Jewlings, all you can do with it is press a and play a random note. The most you are able to do is spam the interact button and hope the random number generator gives you something resembling a song. Make it so that using an instrument opens up an interface that lets you actually compose a song on it like the town theme, except with more shit in it like half/quarter notes, sharps/flats/etc. and different time signatures. Hell, that could also be a neat multiplayer interaction of having multiple people over and playing instruments like a band. Maybe even have a tool you buy from the raccoon jews that lets you actually record your song and keep it in a tape. Let's go even further and have a furniture item that lets you actually mix multiple tapes together and form a song played on more than one instrument. It always struck me as weird that GayGay Slider was the only musician in the Animal Crossing world.

I've actually had ideas for something like that, except burglars are NPCs that have a chance to appear the bigger your house gets.

NPC burglar is the only other human in the game besides you
You can tell you've been hit if the music stops when you approach your house
A burglarized house will have the door left slightly open
Villager will carefully enter it's house with a panicked expression onit's face
lights/lamps will always be snuffed upon entering a burglarized home
burglar will always appear in one room of your house/except the basement
upon finding him(her if you're a female villager) he will attempt to book it for the exit
if you catch him, you'll tackle him/her to the ground, get rewarded by Copper/Booker and have anything s/he stole returned to you
having certain tools out when finding the burglar will insta-catch him/her without needing to chase, each their own unique "takedowns" (trapping the burglar with the net, slingshotting him in the eye, fainting from fear if he sees you holding the axe with your shaky, wide-eyed expression, etc.)
other villagers can be burglarized too
if their burglar is caught, you can bail him/her out of jail the next day and receive a letter and a reward in the mail the next day (maybe add a Crime series of furniture items exclusive to burglars like police evidence markers, a concrete floor with a chalk outline of a person on it, a squad car, a police tape barrier, etc.)

I don't want them to add a single new villager. I just want them to take the 300+ fuckers they already have, and make them all a hell of a lot better. The town needs to be more interactive too. More things to do in it that can be interesting for longer than a week. Stuff to build that actually does things. I'd love to have more types of towns too, like selecting what kind of climate/biome you want maybe. Like if you want to live in a desert, or an alpine region, or the tropics. Expand on the variety in general, just make the game feel like it has more of a soul to it. Though if you make it too immersive you risk ruining people's lives.

Make holidays 2-3 days long, starting a day before and/or ending a day after the actual holiday. Some of us actually have friends and family we want to spend those real holidays with. I know I can time travel, but that breaks the immersion. Also, give me more to do at night.
This would be rad. I've always wanted to be able to play videos either saved on my Switch's SD or pulled from websites on the TVs in my house. That's probably asking for the moon, but it would be amazing.

More than likely we'll hear something about a new game at E3 since that's also where the New Leaf trailer dropped.

Best friend
If you have a good enough relationship with a resident you can ask them to be your 'best friend', which stops that particular resident from moving away
host parties
if your house is big enough get a tenant
more ways to earn bells with 'jobs' which are minigames like cooking
street full of fun shops thats not just furniture tools and clothes
goals to reach after you pay off your house, maybe be able to expand on it until its a friggen mansion with pool or become an estate mogul

Don't you realize that if you were their best friend, then you'd let them move away? If the town doesn't work for them, or they need to leave to fulfill their ambitions (job, school), it would be extremely selfish to take "ownership" of them like that.

Although I agree with you in principal, they could make it so that you can still communicate with them via mail to learn about all the cool stuff they're doing in other places. Maybe they can visit during the holidays or the player's birthday. Good friends tend to stay in touch.

That's a dumb post because:

a.) Trips are not a limited resource. It's not like I just "stopped" someone from getting trips a month or a year from now.
b.) I can't control my post ID its random
c.) You saged and didnt even do it right

While that'd make sense in reality, the animals ingame just leave for arbritrary reasons out of nowhere, and theres no way to talk to them once theyre gone unless they randomly show up on main street to say one, maybe two lines of dialogue. If they rework it so that your best friends leave for good reason and you could call them or something, then I'd be more willing to let them go.

Minigames.
I really liked Animal Crossing on the Gamecube, but outside of some minor shit, the "game" part of it all was really lacking. It's a good town sim and making the perfect room and attending events is cute as hell, but I sure wish you could do something with other villagers, especially now that going into other people's towns is the norm.
How about a Tennis minigame? Or some small do-si-do rhythm game? Or even just being able to play instruments with others.

Gavin Thompson

The ability to put the game world in a cryostasis-like state where the town doesn't deteriorate and your villagers don't move in/out when you know you're not going to be playing for an extended period of time. I know that it was originally part of the series' appeal that the game world keeps going even while you're not changing, but now it's more of an impediment to playing again than anything else. I wouldn't suggest getting rid of the flow of time entirely, but to put it on pause would be beneficial if you wanted to return but didn't want to be greeted with a town overrun by weeds with villagers you don't recognize.

All I wanted out of New Leaf was the ability to rotate patterns, if they added this in the welcome amiibo update it would have been perfect; but no, of course they fucking didn't.

Dating is just about the only thing left. I mean, it'd be about as in depth as the house visits, but it could instead be meet-ups at specific places, perhaps culminating in a cute picture you could take with your "very close friend".
