When you think about it, all vidya Kikestarter projects that get too much money all end up having a terrible fate. I wonder why they just don't make what they promised first, and then build over it with the remaining money. I'm not a game designer, so I might say bulllshit, but there must be a logical approach to spend project money wisely.

Even assuming the people making the game and receiving the money have the best of intentions, Kickstarter is actually horrible for the archetypal "industry veterans band together to make the game you always wanted without the MAN holding us down" funding campaign. The reason being is that industry veterans are almost all egotistical assholes that have their own specific ideas about how a game should be made. The result is almost always feature (or scope) creep, which means that new shit is added to the game during development beyond what was planned.
These projects don't usually exist because one man has a vision that everyone also sees, which is how a truly good and cohesive project gets made. They exist because dumbasses just assume that throwing a bunch of talented people in a room will result in a good game after about 3 years. If I were to fund any game on Kickstarter, it would much sooner be an upstart with a bunch of no name college grads on his team with a cool idea than the typical has-been shtick.

Massive Chalice's central idea was vaguely of a Japanese game series. You have a clan, the clan members are going to die out pretty quickly in game time, so you need to keep them breeding for more clan members. The mix up was it used time manipulation stuff so if your characters got hit AT ALL, they would start aging like if Ermor were left unchecked, and it used SRPG combat that reminded me a bit of Firaxis' XCOM. It had zero fucking art style, or rather, it was incredibly ugly and the game didn't present itself in such a way where that would be fine. Oh, and I think you just waited for things to happen between battles. I have no idea how the end product turned out, but that overall package seemed kind of shitty to me.
Meanwhile, that Japanese game series, at least the latest one, was that your clan would age super fast, and were infertile unless they fucked similarly cursed humans, or gods. Gods didn't really want to fuck your people unless they did impressive stuff like murder a bunch of demons, and fucking the same god repeatedly would make your clan less and less human and more like the god that was committing incest. Unfortunately, the last one had some woman hijack the plot and become a permanent party member while the rest of your poor bastards died out in the span of months if they didn't get killed in combat.

I have to give Braben credit where it's due; you might think Elite is dull and boring and I certainly can't say anyone who thinks that is wrong, but he actually released the game he said he was going to, he never got ridiculously deep in the red, updates were substantial and consistent, etc. He actually did what all Kikestarter and other campaign devs should have done and were expected to do, he has my respect for that at least.
