Not to knock demosceners or say they can't make vidya - they can, and have - but the small size wizardry of demoscene stuff is because it's all algorithmic. It's a display of image processing skill and not something practical (or even possible) for video games.
This just seems like the vidya version of broscience or fuddlore. I hear this trotted out a lot but I've never seen any proof nor do I have reason to suspect it's true for ALL big games. I mean, no doubt audio is part of it, but textures, pre-rendered video, and a host of other things contribute as well. There's no size limits when dealing with digitally distributed PC games since bandwidth and storage is cheap. Since you don't have to fit to physical media anymore and there's no significant incentive to compress them, there's no point wasting resources to do so.
