How are Bonneters able to take possession of and reanimate inanimate objects, and also have people like Mario act as the main host to take possession of those things?
Are Bonneters the first characters in the Mario universe to be able to bend reality?

Couldn't the ghosts in Luigi's Mansion do the same thing? Namely the ones in Dark Moon.
Seems far more balanced if they can't so much possess things themselves as much as they bestow that ability onto others.
I would disagree. The ghosts in Luigis Mansion are within their own element as the ghosts subspecies of the Mario universe. Therefore it seems natural for them to retain common modern day conceptions of paranormal entities, such as ghosts, and their ascribed behavior.
So what the ghosts do in Luigis Mansion, is simply what a good amount of people in the real world believe ghosts do, and one of them is to make shit move, like tables and doors, etc. What the Bonneters are able to do is on another level, and despite their cartpolish ghostly appearance, they seem to have biological qualities and lead normal ways of life.
Boss ghosts, even in the one on GC could shapeshift you or teleport you into alternate areas where you had to beat them. They didn't act like traditional ghosts.
The Bonneters are also able to freely change their own form at will, like with Cappy taking the appearance of Mario's hat, and other Bonneters you see through out the post game. I'm disappointed the lore behind Bonneters being obsessed with Top hats was never revealed.
You're right. Although I would think that all that power was being fueled by King Boo through the mansion he created, and not necessarily coming from the ghosts themselves.

In Mario Odyssey, you don't play as Mario. You play as Cappy who is controlling Mario.

Absolutely now. Bowser painted the pictures in 64 that bend reality causing obstacle courses, physically creating pocket dimensions. Bowser Jr. produced portals out of ink in Sunshine that would move you between areas of the island very quickly, and created a physical form for himself out of the same ink that mimicked Mario.
If you count Paper Mario, then Dooplis actually removed an aspect of the player's interface to prevent them from spelling his name, and switched bodies with Mario later in that level.
There were plenty of other characters that could bend reality.

The same way you normally 'possess' Mario when you control him: remember you are not Mario, but the player controlling him. Bonneters are just redirecting your control to another target, but you've always exercised your power of possession.
