Mom is a baby boomer liberal

...

Worse than Republicans

Am I crazy or is everyone else misusing this? Neoliberalism means 'free trade' right? Not SJWs or whatever.

you are a good boy dont let your lib mommy get you down comrade

My mom is not an SJW in the least. She isn't particularly fond of black people.

Everyone IS misusing it. Neoliberalism isn't a political philosophy, it's a historical era.
Liberal Capitalism -> Keynesian Capitalism -> (neo)Liberal Capitalism

I just mean Neoliberalism has nothing to do with what North Americans call liberalism. It is system of free market capitalism for world trade, as far as I understand it.

When people use neoliberal on this board they use it to refer liberal conservatives, social liberals, and classical liberals.

Something with FDR changed the meaning of the term liberal in America.

You are correct and neoconservativism is in a similar vein. These two terms should only be used in reference to global politics.

Feels good to be able to rage about capitalism to my family all I want.

...

Eh, how exactly?

Be nice to your mom, user, or you'll regret it when she's gone.

He can love his mom, just disagree ideologically.
I find with older women, like my mom, they're more hard headed, anyway. If I can explain something properly to her though, I can change her mind. But those deeply into MSM, it's harder to get them out. The propaganda is knocking at their door, daily, when I don't talk to her daily(I live 8,000 miles away).

You're right, though.

I second this. Seems like a weird combo.

wrong. it's both. since reagan there's been a distinct set of policy implementation that we can identify as "neoliberal".

Clinton the "Democrat" passed NAFTA ffs. Did everyone suddenly forget that standard operating procedure is to make vague populist promises during the campaign and then, in office, follow the same mysterious Bilderberg agenda that has absolutely nothing to do with your "positions?" I'm 29 and Trump is a once-in-a-lifetime miracle in that he's actually delivering on his popular promises.

Democrats are as subservient to megacorps as the Republicans. That's why they push social wedge issues so hard. Letting transexuals use the bathroom they want doesn't hit porky's bottom line. ACA got people insured (very shittily and wastefully) through an obscene government handout/subsidy to insurance megacorps. It's a joke compared to a real single payer system. Porky won again. Trump is at least pissing them off a bit for whatever reason and that's cause for celebration. Now that the ice is broken maybe we'll get gutsier politicians in the US.

pretty much this fam, I want to make the most of being around my parents while they're still here, but find myself so self-absorbed a lot of the time.

good luck trying to redpill anyone over the age of 30 user. me and my sister's Marxist politics do influence the household somewhat, but you'll rarely get anyone above a certain age to change their fundamental worldview. it's hard enough with people in their 20s.

What helps most of the time is just listening and not calling them out on wrongthink, but appealing to shared consensus on basic issues, and gently pointing out contradictions that flow from it.

If they are racist, don't shout "dass raycis," (I know people don't do this, it's a joke), don't just disengage (people do do this), but in stead ask for concrete experiences or fears, and work from there. Few people are racists fro theoretical or axiomatic reasons. You'll often end up having them agree that there are in fact deeply human reasons for migrants wanting to come here, for example, and there might be human costs to the policies they support that they are not prepared to shoulder. The way people are supposed to talk non-ideologically basically.

Be more like Bernie, but without killing Rosa.

Great point.

I'm definitely guilty of this & it accomplishes nothing. It's best when, like you said, you get them to talk more to get a better idea of what they believe. I've gotten to the point where I've thought that just asking them what they "believe in", what their principles are is a good way to start. Give them better ideas on accomplishing those goals. Whether or not we/they know it, many conservatives even have the same goals, they just need a more realistic explanation or outcome/option given to them. A lot of Americans at least, have no grasp on basic political ideas, especially if they're workers who are being worked hard daily. It sounds lazy, but it's not, many just simply can't find the time to learn. So having someone who cares explain something to them is extremely helpful. I didn't even know what socialism or communism is just 2-3 years ago; I'm 30 now.

:^)

Don't fall for the socdem meme american. Social demcoracy isn't a political ideology, it's organized crime

Thing is, this kind of non-alienated conversation can only happen in a kind of intimate setting. You can't do this with any Joe Schmoe in the boutube comment section, it would tire you out. But for family, friends, coworkers - people you have to get along with, that matter to you, this is the way to go.

Being a bit older than I used to be - 29 - definitely helps, it chilled me out, and social skills accumulate over time. Learning the theory can happen anytime, but the skills to transmit it for most (excepted the charismatic among us) come later.

Neoliberalism is about the privatization of everything not nailed down. It IS a political philosophy as most people agree on screwing the worker for the benefit of capital.
