That's just lazy level design, open world is not to blame. The "open" world is just a huge empty desert with linear roads and a few half assed designed bases anyway.

Be as it may, the Ground Zeroes map was very good and the game could have benefited with less open world and more big, open maps. It would have likely cost them less time and money to produce and resulted in a tighter experience.

The development took too long because Kojimer was bloating the project time to get more salary.

kirkbrides fantastic writing combined with a tighter focus because of handcrafted levels came together with a veteran team that still had a classic way of thinking created something great.
