How many hours of gameplay justifies $20? How many hours justifies $50 or $60?

How many hours of gameplay justifies $20? How many hours justifies $50 or $60?
Should hours of gameplay be used to measure how much a game is worth at all? If not, then what?

Hours of fun is more important than hours of gameplay.
"How many hours long is it?" is not a good question when it's likely to be extended by tedious grinding and gatcha faggotry.

Depends on how wealthy you are, how much you enjoy those hours, and what you consider is a dollor well spent. Most anons will answer zero cause they are pirate fags. If we go by a movie standard it's about 6 dollars per hour which is pretty expensive, but a full price game running for 12 hours is 5 per hour, so make of that what you will. Personally for me it's at about 3 or below.

$20 - 100 hours
$50, $60 - no sale

Depends how regrettable those hours are.

Oldfags used to pay $50 for a game that could be beaten in 2-3 hours. The longer RPG games had a niche fanbase. Most games were shorter.

Olderfags used to pay $50 for a game that had 5-15 minutes of gameplay (but had some replay value from randomness) for the privilege of playing it at home without having to go outside to an arcade.

Now the key question is: are those hours of gameplay any good?

What even are we talking about? Multiplayer games? Singleplayer games? Both?

1 hour = $1 is a decent first approximation for a game's price to me, but there are many other factors. Like I think Ori and the Blind Forest is worth $15-20 even though a first playthrough probably won't take many people that long, just because I find it to be an enjoyable and well made game. For something like the Uncharted games though, I wouldn't think a price above $5-10 was reasonable since I don't think they have much to enjoy beyond some shitty Hollywood story you watch once and never care about again. Replayability is also a big factor. Something like Way of the Samurai is short for each individual ending, but offers a lot of different endings and shit to do so it's value would increase a lot based on that. Then you get into genres like rhythm games where it gets really subjective and could either be a huge amount of enjoyment for the price or barely worth $1 depending on how much you like the music and mechanics. It would probably be best to break things down by genre at the least if you really wanted to use the X money = X hours type of judgement.

Video games.

The fact that they cost $50 back then means they were actually much more expensive.

@14103213
Faggot retard.

...

...

I don't think you can fairly make a call like that about any game until it's finished. It's like an amusement park ride, sort of. You don't really know what it's worth until it's already done.

That must be embarrassing.

Honestly it depends on the wealth/ quality you are looking for.

When I was in college and had no money, basically the only games I would buy were like GOTY and on sale for like 60% off.

After I graduated and got a decently high paying job, I stopped caring as much about cost and pretty much just bought games that sort of interest me. Which to be fair isn't very many these days, but making money has definitely contributed to me being a normalfag.

That's not how you respond to a post silly newfriend

I can beat Contra in a half hour but I've replayed it so many times that I've put more hours into it than a typical JRPG. I personally wouldn't have a problem paying full price for a game that short but of that quality. Short length can be overcome by being well designed and challenging enough to warrant extra playthroughs.

No purchase over $45 unless rare release and has to at least give 50 hours of enjoyable playetime.

Holy shit. Put me in the screen cap if it happens.

what a fucking dumbass

Are you guys legitimately retarded? It's the same thing as doing

$20 - 200 hours of fun
$50 - 500 hours of fun
$60 - 600 hours of fun
In other words, I demand 10 hours worth of fun gameplay for every dollar.
Cucks who say 1 hour = 1 dollar are subhumans who would probably pre-order an EA title and spend their salary on microtransactions only to be fucked over by the devs but defend them on every single social media comment section anyway because they're cuckolds to the absolute core.

Developers need us, we do not need them. They better realize that. Me paying them money for a game means that their product is of good quality. Games of bad quality are not even worth a single cent.

And people still announce reports, filters, and sage despite it not doing anything.

Who even spends 200 hours in a single game, let alone 600. Terraria is the only game of mine that is that high (311), and that's only because of multiplayer.

Many people, including me

...

...

Sir, you are one good consumer. I respect you.

200 hours is nothing.

When I was in my teens I decided $1 = 10 hours, but then I realized I don't play most games for hundreds of hours.
So I stopped paying for games over $20. Some of the most fun I've had was under $15, usually even less than $5. I'm much happier with these games for a variety of reasons.

People who play videogames

All games are free, newfag. You cannot justify paying for digital media

If you got it for free then it has absolutely nothing to do with the OP. Though you could still see if it would be worth the money through counting the hours you played.
You played 40 hours and got bored? But the game is sold for $50 ? Then the developers are worthless talentless hacks and should be fired, every last one of them, unironiccally

Thank you OP, and to my surprise you were not a faggot

What are subscription-based games

Fixed it for you. If someone's equating a $20 purchase to 200 hours of fun then they're either not buying many games or they're not playing many games, or both.

how do you fuck up that hard
what website even uses @ for responses

You can't even get that much time out of most video games.

I recommend using it in the above way. It still shows you're replying to someone, but without actually giving them a (you)

I don't think you know what newfag means.

Then they're crap video games.

Ideally each game should give you infinite amounts of fun, but higher priced games should give better quality fun. Ideally and should, not realistically and could.

Or alternatively, not padded out with grindan or whatever shit makes them last that long. I can only think of grindan games like Disgaea, multiplayer games, or garbage like Diablo.

...

Discord does.

I picked up Morrowind GOTY back in '05 for about $25 in a Blockbuster and that was worth about 250 hours (actually a lot more - I'm rounding down heavily here). That's been my standard ever since - $1 gets you 10 hours. Any less is for pirating.

You are my friend. I would have you for my bride if you were a woman.

If you want to deny giving (You)'s there are ways that involve a lot less faggotry than this shit.

I'm lmaoing @ your life

No (You)s for you either.

>>14103504
Don't you mean

?

I can easily burn 200 hours on a game during 2 to 3 months while also playing other games sporadically, before christmas I played 200 hours in fightan, finished 3 games and sunk some considerable time into medieval2, all that not being a neet

Near 200 hours (or more) for anything with replay value (drastically different builds or story lines/100% that's actually good/strategy of any kind/online shooters) is very much possible and what you usually want to buy. Anything below that can still be fun but it shouldnt cost more than 30-40 dollars, and that's a stretch

Now it makes sense

Generally speaking, I'd say that in order to be worth $60, it needs to pull at least 40 hours of entertainment. Entertainment is vastly different from amusement. See:

In my opinion, Piracy is the means to entry, but not necessarily the means to end. By this, I mean that piracy is a perfectly valid option when it comes to researching purchasing decisions, since demos are so rare these days. Even then, demos are not entirely indicative of the product as a whole, since demos are often released from different builds entirely. Pretty shitty to buy a game just for it to run like ass, play like ass, or generally just be a shit game altogether.

That being said, if a game is absolutely phenomenal, I'll either purchase it halfway into the game, or I'd pay what it was worth to me after completion. Mileage varies, but don't discount piracy under faggotry, as it's a perfectly valid tool for the consumer, both for negotiation as well as information.

It's important to pay what you truly believe a game is worth, however. Provided that the money goes to the developers as opposed to the publisher, unless the publisher is pretty cool too - but that's a massive rarity.

...

I took 200 hours as the lowest possible value in that post, which suggested 600 hours for a full-priced release. I think the only game in the past two years for which I really hit that metric was the PC release of DDDA, which I picked up for $30 on release and played for 300 hours that year.
I get that this figure is supposed to be impressive but that's more or less consistent with what I said. 3 games completed alongside a timesink across three months is pretty slow

I haven't looked at this thread but I just know it will be shit

Depends on quality, gametime is kind of a shitty mechanic for actually judging consumer enjoyment of a game
See: NITW speed throttling to attempt to make sure you play the game at least 2 hours so you can't refund it

And no, this is not a joke, the game does (or at least did they might have patched it out) throttle how fast you can proceed to extend game time, and not in a "It's an RPG with a fixed walk speed so you're likely going to get to X after Y minutes"

This isn't Discord, you knob.

I said videogames not grinders, if a videogame can't supply hundreds of hours of fun at a minimum it's a crap videogame.

I only have time to play vidya for 4 hours a day. On the weekends I can theoretically play more, but I live alone and have chores to take care of and a car to repair because I'm too poor to take it to a mechanic. Or I just sleep and shitpost all day like a lazy faggot because I have no energy from the week. So let's just ignore the weekends.
After the gubbament has robbed me, I earn about $10 per hour. But 8 hours of work has to be compensated for by 4 hours of fun to keep me sane, so my designated fun hours are twice as valuable. So I expect, for $10, 2 hours of fun, or $5 per hour. A $60 release should give me at least 12 hours of fun. That's the bare minimum, and I'll obviously take a better value where I can find it. A 90 minute movie that I paid $11 to see in theaters is an okay value, provided the entire movie entertains me and not just one five minute scene in a sea of shit. A game like The Witcher 3, that has 150 hours of content, most of which is fun, is an excellent deal. A multiplayer game that I keep going back to for months like Splatoon is great, even at full price. A tripple-ayy FPS with a 4 hour campaign and shitty multiplayer, for $60, is something I won't even touch.
The key here is hours of FUN also. Something that feels like a chore has no value.

You ask a fine question, and of course, the answer will be subjective to one's tastes and values.

A game must have replay-ability to hold value, otherwise you might as well rent it or sail the high seas or at least sell it for a loss and take the overall loss as the cost.

Due to the shit that has been shoveled our way over the last ten years, I've waited until the cost of a new game ages to 20 dollars– and that is for a 'good' game. Even then I am disappointed.

Recently, I pay I think 5 bucks for torchlight 2 and have already got my value out of it, because I am well over 100 hours and having fun.

To wind up, the eight hour game with no replay fun or extras is valueless and should never be bought.

...

...

not if they are smt1, nocturne and homm And I also forgot to mention I played other stuff in that time like tf or dorf
My point is, nothing should cost more than 40 bucks, and getting 200 hours of enjoyment out of a game while playing other stuff is perfectly possible, there's at least 1 or 2 games like this every year. Besides, how many games are you gonna play in 3 months for example? Are you going to buy/pirate every release?

Nigga, you just outed yourself as underage.

Not him, but isn't that in Canada/Australia?

Possible, but prices got up to $80 in the US as well, depending on the cart.

Prices didn't hit a steady sub-$50 till CD media took over. Even N64 games could reach $80 in the US, Perfect Dark being one of them.

As a strange coincidence I replayed those first two in the past year as well and they did take a few weeks apiece (alongside other games), so I suppose that stands. You have to admit that RPGs are an exception though, obviously not every finite single-player game is going to last that long.
I complete about one game per week on average. If a game really interests me I'll usually replay it but otherwise I just shelve it and move on to the next one, between the shorter games which could be finished in an evening and the longer RPGs I would probably have ten games wrapped up in those three months
I pirate or emulate a majority of my games, but I'll buy them if they're on sale or if it seems like there's a good chance I'll enjoy it. For a concrete example I bought Snake Pass on sale for $10 and spent 15 hours to 100% it across a few days, and that was a satisfying purchase to me even if I never play it again.

Yeah, but the system itself was only 100-200$.

I bought all my 64 games from Blockbuster back in the day. So I think I only ended up paying like 30 bucks each for OoT and Majora's

That's murderously expensive. What the hell were those cartridges made out of, Platinum?

20.

50.

60.

They are synonymous, because why would I play a game if I'm not having fun?

HOLY

SHIT

Literally fucking Twitter most notably.

That's what's hilarious.

They're made of Nintendium. How new are you?

My take.

RPG like Dragon Quest VIII that can eat up months including postgame grinding for extra bosses and exploring the world = worth $60. Basically a complete satisfactory package you can tell had plenty of hard work put in and deserves to pay off.

DS/3DS Pokemon games $30-$40 maximum. Not completely bereft of content, but despite everything you can enjoy collecting, training and unleashing there's little to nothing to do after the credits roll and it's too much about the journey. So it should definitely receive less and be more affordable to fans and consumers with less money.

A buck an hour of actual fun, is what i consider before buying a game. If a $40 game lasts 80 hours but 70 of those hours is mind numbing grind, it is barely worth $10 in my mind.

Wew

Horseshit, Perfect Dark was sold $60 in Canada and back then it was 70 US cent to a Canadian dollar.

I'd pay $60 for a new release that's a couple hours long if it was addicting as fuck and made me constantly want to see what else the game had like Thief or Stalker. Only because I'd have hope again.

That's where the non-whites go.

I have the perfect game for you, it involves a rope and a tree. Won't take more than 30 minutes of your time.

The thing about games is that it's trivial to add more content once you have the mechanics down. Another map, some more enemies. It's easy.

It's why having a 6 hour "campaign" with 4 hours of cutscenes is so terrible.

If a troll, 9/10 job well done.

I agree with glitch costanza

personally 1 hr per buck is my minimum to feel it was even okay.
I mostly play rpg games though, so the last one I bought (.hack GU remaster) I'm nearing 40 for the first two games and I'm not anywhere close to done. I feel this was a good purchase for myself.

OP, I aim for three dollars an hour, as long as I'm enjoying the game and not slogging through it. Any more than that and I feel like I could've spent my money on something better.

R0lf, how terrible

There's no way this isn't bait but fuck it

holy shit. This has to be bait. I cant imagine someone being retarded enough to fuck up something so simple

Skyrim was a pretty good deal. $60 for a game with infinite quests and infinite playtime.

it's not a factor of how long but (fun*length)/(cost*depreciation)

It almost checks out

I remember that thread. You know the saddest thing? The fact that all those retarded underage Holla Forumsedditors actually thought that guy who was checking the 000000 ID was serious. This is what

The problem, to start with, is that $60 is an absurd price for a product that has no scarcity whatsoever. Thanks to digital distribution, they can endlessly produce copies of their game at practically no cost. Physical copies don't even offer much of a benefit outside of a bit of permanence.. but nearly every game these days requires patches and bugfixes to play properly anyways. Not to mention that they've taken to reducing the plastic in game case, removed instruction booklets entirely, and some games are just CD Keys anyways.. On top of that, most companies will destroy tens of thousands of physical copies from a production run over some minor defect in the box art. And the few million that make it to store shelves across the globe, only net retailers a dollar or two per sale, anyways. It's such a miserable amount of money that it's hardly worth the cost to produce and ship them in the first place.

So, tl;dr - Regardless of the game $60 is entirely retarded and serves only to hold the industry back. $20 is a fair starting price, if you ask me, and if publishers sold all their games at such a price, they'd see millions more sales on all their games and exponentially more profits.

Here's a hint: "people" on 4kuks use @ to show how much they don't care by taking extra effort to reply. That "guy" is a refugee fleeing from Hiroshima's new matrix-esque data collection.

@14104527
wow thats a strange id how did you do that?

With the advent of newage MMOs being treated as glorified chatrooms with dress up minigames serviced with tasteless microtransactions, and xXc0mp3t3t1v3Xx sucking in all the morons who hate fun and anything beyond marginal depth for the sake of meta and skill (because they saw their favorite youtuber make a joke our of ranked, so they can have fun doing it, too), I'd have to say the hours per dollar system can't exactly be made for those kinds of games. If anything, fun+time/$ should be more directed at singleplayer games. Though, who am I to say, my most played games are SS13, actual roguelikes, and Dorf Fort, which are all free.

...

Those prices seem about right for the US in the 90s. Console games being consistently priced at 50 bucks didn't start around the 2000s, and gameboy games around that time started to cost 40 as well. Thinking back the 6th generation was the best generation for consumers in both in quality and price ratio of video games. This was also around the same time that PCs finally surpassed consoles in power as well.

Got like 500 hours in Path of Exile for free
200 hours in Grim Dawn for like 15 dollarydoos.

Got about 12 Hours for Nier Automata 59 bucks.

Seems like the more you pay, the less you get.

I'd say a dollar for every hour you actually enjoyed playing in the game. Since arcades charge a quarter for one life or a few minutes I'd say it's a good comparison. Doubling the hours to dollars you spent I would say the game was worth it- if again you were actually enjoying the game for at least most of the time and not forcing yourself to play it because you wasted $20 on a genuinely bad game.

That being said, I always pirate the game first if I can before I give my hard earned shekels to a developer who either blatantly lied about what the game truly had in store for the player. If the game is decent and has a good "replayability" factor I'll consider giving the developer my support.

would you say automata is worth a shot or a pirate?

Pirate it first, but like Nier, you're going in mainly for the world and combat and ass rather than the gameplay, since it's meant to be accessible to everyone.

World and story rather than the combat*
I need to stop posting when i'm tired.

For 60$ it'd better be a game that's 1000 hours long and with the best gameplay to boot or else it's no sale. For 20$ I'd maybe, maaybe pay for a witcher 3 type of game.

Never.
It is how much uninterrupted fun you have that counts.
I would trade 100 or more hours of CURRENT YEAR western games for 20 minutes of Mega Drive's Bonanza Brothers anytime.

Gameplay is ok, story is good imo. Getting and seeing all the possible endings was fun. It's a good game, but maybe not 60 dollars good. Then again in my mind, no/very few games are worth more than 30USD

lmao
I just buy buckets of games on steam, try getting a job and moving out of your parents basement losers

How's living on your parents' dime, kiddo? I could have Trump's money and yet I wouldn't be retarded enough to buy "buckets of games" from gayben at full price. Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

Thank you. That was a refreshing shitpost.

RPGs- 1dollar>10hours
Anything else- 1dollar>1hour

Replayability is the single most important factor and I would gladly shell out $50 for a short arcade game if they were priced closer to their real value to me.

Pathetic.

Games are cheaper to make than movies, and far easier aswell.

Do you mayhaps mean the early 90s?
6th gen was when PC gaming became cheaper.

Since when does such low tier bait get so many replies? What the fuck?

...

The amount and intensity of fun is what matters, not the hours of gameplay. The concentration on "gameplay" is what got us the modern open world meme.
Problem is that most modern games lack both in the amount and intensity of fun they provide, making them not even worth the bandwidth to pirate, let alone any payment.

I base it on how good the game is.

$1 per hour.

$3 per hour.

$5 per hour.

$8 per hour.

$10 per hour.

For the most part, when I say "per hour" I actually mean "per hour of entertainment". Something like MGSV where half of my playtime was running around waiting for helicopters or extracting randoms between missions while waiting for R&D to finish doesn't count as an hour worth my time.

Jesus, the cancer on this board has intensified to the point where we may no longer be able to contain it.

why contamine it?

This is like valuing food by how long it takes to eat it. A severely overcooked steak might be so chewy that it takes you an hour to eat, but that doesn't make it better than a good one you can go through in 5 minutes.

Intelligence indicates that the user is one of those faggots behind the problems on twitter. He probably has one of those meme spouting accounts.

A bunch of pretentious oldfags larping at running the net. But the net left them behind long ago. We are the future

I go by length and compare it to movie rentals from redbox
If the average film is $2 and lasts 2 hours that's my baseline. Or a dollar an hour.
If a $60 game doesn't provide a minimum of 60 hours of gameplay, it's not worth the cost

In might actually make more sense to see things from the development side of things.

How many hours was put into making the game? How many people worked on it? What kind of budget did it have? How much trial and error went into the game design? Gameplay hours don't say jack about the actual quality of the product but the number of hours that was put into making the game can be an indication.

We have other problems.

If you live 70 years and spend 12 hours a day being entertained, your entire life costs about $306,000 to keep active and happy while you act as a useful tool

Unicode?

No Savage.

∑ ⚡⚡Unicode?? ⚡⚡∑

Quit screwing around.

Anyways, our meme brigade is far in advance of theirs, as is our cAIke sentience, and their…ethical inflexibility has allowed us to make progress in areas they refuse to consider.

I don't pay for video games because I'm not a fucking communist

I propose a game's price should match how many hours a run of the game will take. Not a speedrun, not a 100% run, but an average run where a player puts the effort in to see most of the game. Just estimate that amount and round it off. The only catch is that the price should always cap at $60, no higher. If a game is too short, perhaps a minimum cap of $5 or $10 would be fair.

Just one idea, anyway.

Disney's Tarzan?

If I meant 90s it would of been late 90s, when 3d consumer gpus like voodoo came out. Also in the late 90s emulation of 2d consoles on the PC came out. Also everything became cheaper in vidga at that time, most of that was because of cd/dvd format finally being an industry standard.

And to think half chan was supposed to attract these retards…

True. A game should ideally be making more money than was spent… if any is spent at all. This is also assuming the budget was used properly, though. A lot of games blow their budget on shit other than the game, like excessive marketing. Mishandled games like that don't deserve to make a profit. They tend to be full of pre-order deals and microtransactions in a vain attempt to make up for the wasted money.

this is a 4cuck meme just so you fags are aware, it's to deny people (you)'s

and how would you know?

Reported for being a rapefugee.

...

Do you lack reading comprehension?

...

I read the post, the fact you know it's a cuckchan meme throws you under suspicion to refugee

pirating/being offline fucks up one of the endings.

>the fact you know it's a cuckchan meme
IDs nigger.

...

Doesn't it just make it a bit harder than normal? Does it actually change the story?

Wew lad. You really do lack any reading comprehension.

It make getting the final ending very difficult, and also fucks up the tone severely because of the the way things are different when you're online.

...

I got it and I still agree with him, just for a different reason. The whole point of the backlinking post on image boards is for ease of reading the thread. Fishing for (you)s like if it was some internet points is fucking retarded.

And thus, giving (You)s to faggots that are fishing is equally retarded.

Which is missing the point of why we have backlinked posts in the first place.

Am I the only one that doesn't give a single fuck about the use of @ or other autistic pointless garbage like that?

Yes.

It's less about "how many hours of fun can i get from this?" and more "am I willing to pay this much for this experience?"
Webm related is how I approach most things, since you can apply to just about all other media and still have a good time.

Is that with or without inflation?

Newfags go back where you came from

...

Go back.

so this board stopped being slow around 2014, you're telling me you never went on 4chan before that time? if you have you would have seen the @ meme at least one or two times. and even if you didn't none of that merits all the fucking (You)s you gave to that reply, destroying an entire thread over your newfaggotry and most likely samefaggotry.

Reported.

...

it outdates 2016

Whos the slut in this manga?

...

Non-newfags on Holla Forums are from 2014.

Disgusting

Go back

You guys need to chill out and not give bait this much attention. You destroyed this thread, not supposed cuckchan refugees.

8/v/ is run by a newfag from 2011.

It's hard to bitch when we don't leave though.

...

Nobody cares, shut the fuck up.

It's not newfag. People do this shit to derail threads and it worked.
