ITT: Industry bunkum thats not common knowledge but still interesting
Example: >It expired early in production of Parasite Eve 3 and the game had to be completely remade to be the (((distinctly different enough for copyright reasons))) 3rd Birthday instead
Maybe the strangest reason an ip is dead i can think of.
Modern Square would butcher PE anyway like they do to everything else they once had that was good.

That reminds me of the first Megami Tensei game for the NES. It was actually an adaptation of a trilogy of novels and was developed in tandem with an action game on the PC.

i always wondered if the "TRUE goddess reincarnation" rebranding was some dodgy 1980's way to get around some copyright or royalties. God knows the stories of japanese game development at the time are a horror show.

You know what else Square Enix is butchering? In 2016, Fear Effect Sedna was announced after French studio Sushee pitched the idea to Square Enix. In August 2017, Square Enix announced a remake of Fear Effect titled Fear Effect Reinvented. Due in 2018, Reinvented is being developed by Sushee and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

I think it was just a combination of the new games being on the Super Famicom so it was them trying to differentiate the titles from the originals by making them sound improved. They also were no longer based on the books anymore even the first sequel was unrelated to the novels. Also the author worked with Atlus to write the scenario for the first game so I doubt he would have tried to sue them but I guess you never know.

This I'm interesting in hearing, I already know of how fucking hard it was to program for 5th gen consoles let alone the Sega Saturn so how bad was it during 3rd and 4th gen.

Man you have no idea. Yakuza, hostage taking, literal staff prisons. The 'untold history of japanese games development' volume 2 is full of wierd shit. How sega hired yakuza, everyone but nintendo and bandai literally worked people to death and companies like zainsoft Holla Forums has probably never heard of that shat out some amazing cult classic but it was a pyramid scheme run by a former mafia turned cult leader.
Its a isolated vaccum of crazy.
Angel Young
It's going to be shit and they'll make the protagonist a nigger.

My contribution to the thread is that one of the programmers for Silent Hill made the game run smoothly on the PlayStation through wizardry spells but Konami tried fuck him over and not give him credit because of his age so he blackmailed them by holding the game hostage or something like that. Some if not most of you already know that.
Tell me more.

What is really sad is Bungie is now closer to becoming 343 then 343 has moved towards Bungie. People had such hope for them after leaving Microsoft too.
Yeah there was a reason all the old Japanese games had pseudonyms in the credits. All the studios were absolutely petrified about head hunting. The video game market at the time was fucking exploding and all the games were made by a handful of people. So if you lost a good developer to a rival studio it could cost you so much money. If not just destroy your company.
Jace Bennett
There was some anons with a pirate copy of the ebook doing the rounds on Holla Forums a while back i should have saved it.
The interviews are genuinely fantastic. Not all bad. Like a guy that made his first game on old PC88 demo kiosks in his local department store. He went in with a tape and a lunch and spent all day coding his first game on that demo, printed the code out and sent it to a magazine and won a coding competition to get a job at snk.
Zachary Peterson
Sega must've also hired the yakuza to steal those launch-day Super Nintendos as well. I wonder what the yakuza think of Yakuza, spics and wops were flattered and even laughed at the portrayal of their families and syndicates in Godfather, Goodfellas, and Scarface.

I think Sega hired actual Yakuza to play Yakuza 3 as part of a promotion. The funniest part was when they got to see Kiryu running his orphanage, one of them remarked that he once knew a Yakuza that ran an orphanage, to which another quickly interjects with “Yeah, but wasn’t that just a tax shelter?”
Daniel Williams
I remember reading an article on some guy who was trying to dig up where the Metal Slug guys went, and he couldn't find anything. Is that why all the old SNK artists vanished into thin air? Were they simply too good?
I don't know if that was an actual promotion, but some journalist did interview a bunch of yakuzas playing the game, yes. "Yeah, but he ran it like it was a real thing." That whole interview is great.

I know some similar branding shit.
Getting hired at a company in Japan is basically like joining a family. You're pretty much in for life. Outright firings are rare, but they will give you shit work to do until you quit. I remember someone even saying they didn't even have to work, they were put in an empty room and told to stay there eight hours a day to earn their pay. Apparently that was the most effective technique because people simply couldn't stand the boredom.
Evan Garcia
And in the West they get infested by Jews, Nip-san. I'll take the Yakuza over Mr. Shlomo Goldstein and his genocidal agenda.

Fun story, when Bungie decided to ship Myth 2 they got a message from their Japanese publisher that the game's uninstaller came with a bug which would delete your entire OS if you ran it and if you installed the game in your root directory which almost nobody ever does. Bungie already shipped 200,000 copies, and they had to decide whether they were just going to give it the silent treatment and patch it later since this bug probably wouldn't occur that often, or recall all copies and send out the fixed version instead which would cost them a shitton of money. Bungie opted to do the latter. According to Jason Jones:
Could you imagine modern Bungie doing this after the shit they pulled/are pulling in Destiny 2? Unfortunately this decision and the resulting financial hit was one of the main reasons why Bungie let themselves be bought out by Microsoft so they could stay afloat, only to slowly decline afterwards.

I'm not very familiar with OLD OS's, but just how the fuck would that happen? If anyone knows, please do indulge.

I can only make a random guess, but… 1. OS don't see things like humans do. So it might point to the memory address that is suppose to be where the game is. But if nothing is filled in, by default, a lot of the time it will go to your windows 98/Mac OS directory. Since it was a bug, the uninstaller might never have sent the correct memory address.
2. It goes up one directory of the current directory and deletes that folder. If its in the root base folder though, it might delete that entire harddrive?
Those are wild guesses though.

Xenogears disc 2 was also butchered by FF8
Isaiah Jones
One of the expansions for EVE Online did this shit. CCP programmed the game with a structure similar to that of windows itself. One file was named identically to a file that managed windows boot loader. The uninstaller pointed at the C:\ drive instead of the EVE install directory, that file got deleted, and as a result you couldn't boot to windows.
It wasn't terribly difficult to fix, but it was incredibly bad press for CCP.
Reminder that Final Fantasy XIII-2 was originally Chrono 3.
Chase Adams

I don't think Sega was part of it though. Also it's implied that to score the interview the interviewer had to have sex with one of the Yakuza's girlfriend while he watched.
Their overall consensus was that the plot, characters and dialogue felt very accurate. The level of action did not; anyone that gets into that many fights is getting killed by his own guys for starting trouble.
Asher Barnes
Champion Edition does have some good changes though. All the boss characters are now playable (four new playable total), it added mirror matches (two people couldn't pick the same character before) and there were some other balance changes and new art and music.
Of course the question is if they would have released it at that time, or added some of the content that was part of a later release.

When Final Fantasy came out a lot of people loved it and sent in letters to Square asking for jobs.
They saw that the game was programmed by some group called Nasir, so they asked to join Nasir, or the Nasir department.

He used to more or less deliver though. Being stuck on MS's leash to make Fable sequels that had so little in common with what Fable was initially intended to be is probably the main issue.
Fucked up thing is the original xbox release of Fable had a bunch of incomplete content in it including enormous open world zones ranging from flat texture to actually populated with trees and plants. There was a group at the time called the LAN Pirates who were digging up all kinds of cool shit, then it all just kinda disappeared.

From what I know, murder is rare unless you're part of one of the families and fuck up bad. They'll mostly have you do extremely humiliating and deviant things on camera and/or have your family do it if you don't pay your debts though. They are not above kidnapping loved ones to pass a message and extortion of local businesses is extremely common.

They can and will but usually not for debts. To many Japanese people doing shameful shit is considered worse than death. All has to do with their traditions which puts honor above almost all else. They make you do awful shit which they know they usually can profit off of too. You now know where the most fucked up Japanese porn comes from.

Parasite Eve (the novel) also became a movie in Japan. The game is based more on the movie than the novel itself, being a game sequel to it. The worst art of the deal was that they had the IP for 1 years and did nothing good with it after the first game. Wasted money and wasted ideas.
Lucas Hughes
They mostly only resort to violence on their own members. If you want to see some really fucked up crimes from Japan though, look into the Amagasaki murders.
Alexander Butler
I've read in magazines at the time (so, lies were rampant, mind you) that the FF 8 team actively sabotaged Xenogears internally in Square's office because Xeno was attracting much more attention from Gamers than the brand new FF of the time. Any reliable sources on that?

They aren't stockholders. They are propagandists. Yakuza killing them and taking over their business is the best scenario.

You make both of them watch eachother through a window, install a camera to make sure they do their job then livestream it on a Chinese gambling site where rich chinks bet on whoever they think will die of boredom first.
Jason Hernandez
And I'll take someone who just wants their money (laundering opportunity) over someone with an agenda.
All the "guard" has to do is make sure that the person in isolation doesn't enter the room with a means of entertainment and check by irregularly to make sure that they didn't smuggle anything in. And on top of that, playing video games or reading books or sleeping or something when you're supposed to be "working" - even if your assignment is "sit quietly at this desk and do nothing" - gives the employer an excuse to fire you.

I can think of one even stranger: the rights to various parts of the IP got split up between a bunch of different people/organizations, and AFAIK the only part of the rights anyone has been able to track down is the rights to the IP's name… which somehow wound up in the hands of an insurance company, of all things.
I speak, of course, of good old System Shock.

Do you have any other information that's more specific regarding this lost Fable beta? I remember hearing about a fair few things cut from Black & White 2, so it's not unbelievable that this could have happened. My memory is a bit fuzzy, but I remember that there were supposed to be animatic cutscenes centered around a prophet character that the player god hitched a ride inside the brain of, hence being able to mindread the enemy leaders outside your influence ring. Don't remember anything else that isn't more publically accessible- Black & White 1 style max creature size, scaleable wall thickness & height, the ability for the former to step over the latter- and I've unfortunately never been able to dig up the old ass articles regarding that content again. And considering that B&W2 information I've been snooping for, this is really fascinating.
David Long
Well thanks, asshole… as if my dick wasn't hard enough watching that shit already.
So that one video where they gave the girl an enema, then put a bunch of goldfish up her ass, and then filmed them trying to swim around in her rectum with an endoscope while she blows a middle-aged salary man… that was because some family member couldn't pay their loanshark.
Nice.

Bandai Namco WANTS to release DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3 HD on the current consoles, but can't do it since the original source code is gone ever since they got the license from Atari. I honestly don't understand some game industry taboos. Why the fuck is reverse engineering shit you entirely own so forbidden?
Matthew Peterson
Some versions of half-life 1 supposedly had a similar problem. The game was expected to be installed in /sierra/half-life so the uninstaller deletes its own directory and the one above it, so if you don't install it two directories deep, you lose a bunch of shit (e.g. your games folder, or the entire drive if you installed it as C:\half-life\).
boot.ini was hilarious, mostly because it didn't happen to me. I think it only affected people who installed in on their system drive or something.

Remaster/enchanced port. Examples: Baldur's Gate EE, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth (ported from the PS1 to the PSP).
You're right about people throwing around terms without really understanding them.
Isaac Walker
It's a shame full-on remakes are rarer and rarer nowadays because casuals to whom PCs are completely foreign have no problems paying for "HD" compilations of old games where it's just the old games verbatim just ran at higher resolution. And some great old games out there have aged so much they really would benefit from some newer technology.
Jace Ross
thanks dude (checked)
Adam Wright
Depends. Look at the MGS remake. It takes advantage of the new engine and mechanics, but the original environment and enemy placement was not designed with that immense amount of player freedom in mind. Thus, the game suffers. FFVII remake is going to be shit because they'll dial the kikery up to 11, but that's a problem of a different kind.
I'm really not sure whether I want to agree with you or not. On the one hand, I'd absolutely love to see some old PS1 era classics properly remade, but on the other I know it would likely turn into total fuckery and the game would end up being butchered.
Isaiah Ross
You can never be sure whether or not the remake will stay true to the original, sometimes they make changes that ruin the moment. Webms related. And lets not forget if the game has licensed music and the rights expire.
