They weren't individualists, to begin with. They didn't rely on a market of identities, the state set the optimal standard for the übermensch and you were encouraged to live up to it. Identity isn't "belonging to a group," it's exactly what makes an individual (believe he's) different from others. Group formation and group cohesion works on a super-ego level not on the level of identity: something (a goal) or someone (a leader) you put above yourself, following its command.
Idpol doesn't have a clearly defined goal, it doesn't propose collectivity to overcome an enemy. What makes idpol groups unstable and infinitely compartializable is exactly this lack of any collective cohesion.
They don't have real external enemies either. They don't propose to eradicate white men like nazis wanted with Jews. Instead they go on about with their endless (exactly because fruitless) pseudo-activities of muh privilege-checking, meat eater shaming, and so on.

So this article is okay, but because we're all constantly surrounded by this garbage, it's only natural we find drastic over-simplifications in it.
If I'm not mistaken, the thesis is that the fun of Holla Forums is fundamentally opposed to the traditionalism of Spencer and the like. Jacobin goes on to do a surface level class analysis where they say that the fun of Holla Forums is due to coming of age in this time of economic crisis.
While this is partially true, this is really one of the few times that an intersectional approach is helpful – the fun associated with Holla Forums is intimately tied to their hatred of women. Inspired by the ">tfw no gf" /r9k/ fags, Holla Forums has viewed their inability to get women not as a failure of themselves, but as the logical realization of the "sexual revolution," where they say that the entirety of the female population is all fucking the top ~20% of men while the rest get nothing. Its this where the nexus of "normalfaggotry" came from, and thus the fun to "scare off," the people they think are taking the women that they feel entitled to. Thus, they long for the days of traditionalism, where they are guaranteed a partner as some sort of property. Once they have a partner, they will then feel no need to "poopoo pepe" post or whatever.

Over the years I've seen media outlets try and write a coherent piece about imageboard culture and, to give the author credit where it's due, this one was less bad than the vast majority of them. There's too much nuance between all different boards and the individuals that use them, as well as the types of people who form the Alt-Right to be able to write a piece as concise as this one without losing accuracy, so I guess this wasn't too bad a job.
