Part of the issue is that when people go looking for alternatives, and see said boards apparently dead, they're not apt to start posting much, if anything, themselves because of the notion that what effort is expended will be a waste (their posts won't get responses, or perhaps even read). Beyond that, there's the decay spiral, where even if a board does get popular, people eventually start leaving for more broad boards that have more active discussion, which in turn causes more people to leave as the problem self-perpetuates. Thus pretty much any non-Holla Forums video game focused board fails (if not from the very start, then overtime), while Holla Forums, as many problems as it has, continues to be the go-to vidya board here.

I do have to wonder if board owners can see how many people are lurking their board per day, or just how many people are actually posting. If the former, a way to show how many lurkers there currently are could give some boards a needed boost, since even if there's not much posting going on, there'd still be interest shown.
