Admit it, you're just lazy. If you can spend 30 minutes watching a stream you can spend 30 minutes actually playing videogames. Half an hour is more than enough to advance a quest or beat a level. Hell, 30 minutes a day and you can crack a puzzle game in a couple of weeks. If online is your thing then most matches don't last longer than 15 minutes unless it's an RTS or something complex.

He could always play at 720p low settings for the console experience. Tell him to get a HDMI cable and Xbox 360 controller. As long as he gets 15-30 fps he is good.

I sometimes watch streams and tournaments to get good at Warcraft 3. I even watch my own replays sometimes just to get better. People were sharing replays to get good before streaming as a phenomenon was even a thing yet because sometimes the only way to get better or at least to learn some new tricks is by watching someone else play.

If I was a game dev and saw my game was highly watched on twitch I would be insulted, it would mean more people would rather watch my game then play it.

I can't watch any streams, most of the time it makes me cringe at the person playing the game poorly or it makes me bored and feels like I would be spending my time better playing the game myself.

I watch videos of multilayer matches to observe tactics to use when playing friends. It genuinely bores me though.

I was\am a streamer and want to have success in the future without resorting to any mainstream practices (or at the very least not extremely cancerous ones). Thus I first hand know of several reasons why streaming can actually be productive:
1. People watch a shitty game streamer suffers through for entertainment of everyone else. It's like watching a horrendous film with friends, for the exception where one is a required to be subject to suffering through it first hand. Game is not required to be actually bad, for example horror games that a streamer is naturally weak to.
2. People watch a person being good at a particular game or games in general.
3. People watch a person for his personality, because he makes everything fun.
4. Like 3., but is about the community having a reason to hang out in chat where stream is just a pretext.

But when you look at the streamer system and examples it provides en masse, they can't give you anything but 3 (which from our perspective is questionable too). They usually play some cancer fad game with cliche cancer practices being stacked on top of each other. I don't think it speaks for streamers and streams themselves being cancer, but how the system is garbage and how hard it is to actually become popular. Well, it also speaks for most people not being worth anything, but the cancer they adopt. But you already knew that.

I watched a full LP of Duelist of the Roses at one point because I didn't have any interest in acquiring the game, but wanted to see how such a dumb premise would turn out.

It actually looked kind of cool, to be honest.

Duelist of the Roses is unironically a fun game that's mostly well built. It's main issues is it's a bit too easy and grinding characters so they can be Deck Masters take way too fucking long so you're never going to get the chance to experiment in the campaign. And it's not like it has a thriving multiplayer scene either.
