I think a factor that helps bump 2017 as a good year for games is major companies, IPs, and even a cancerous business practice taking significant blows such as EA, andomeda, and wolf2. I've played Bladur's Gate and I've played Divine Divinity and I've played D:OS. Original Sin had a rough start, but I had a decent amount of fun once you got past the first town. However, I probably got 3/4 of the way through before I just quit, because the battles were so fucking tedious. It took so long to fight anything and everything, it ate up so much time, and after a while it's stopped being entertaining to fight things and became just another "oh great more enemies." No, I didn't have trouble with the game.
Is D:OS2 the exact same system copypasted with more content? Does it still take fucking ages to engage enemies, choose actions, wait for animations, wait for enemy turn and more animations, ad nauseam? Because if so, it is definitely not a CRPG for the ages.

5th and 6th gen will certainly never be topped, 3D and photorealism were still young, which made budgets for making vidya much lower and led to more room for innovation, even big japanese companies would often produce small, interesting games dedicated to exploring gameplay gimmicks.
Nowadays there's just no technological jump for decreasing the budgets for vidya again and even if that happened we would only get more shovelware, and the closest thing we would get to "experimentation" would be pretentious indie reskins of atari 2600 games on Greenlight.
