Thanks OP, I went and reinstalled the real Star Wars Battlefront II and had a fucking blast.
It's nice that all I had to do to get better weapons was git gud, and they'd show up as temporary (then permanent) upgrades. Likewise, if I wanted to play a hero, I just had to not suck. No money required, no barriers to content besides mediocre skills. Also being able to play the campaign co-op was a ton of fun, did it with my dad on the PS2 years ago.

We already do. It's called the original Battlefront II where the campaign had you go from Clone Trooper to Stormtrooper as a member of the 501st. It told it how it would be from the Imperial side after the Death Star was destroyed. That during their attack on the rebellion they were filled with rage and fighting to get revenge for all who died in it's destruction.
