This actually is really important, imho. Have your own first-person character killed , and you may feel frustrated at best. But the further the character you control is away from your actual control (think of fixed cameras and tank controls in the early Resident Evil or Silent Hill titles), the more you genuinely feel guilty about their death, because you perceive them as genuine characters, not just as player avatars.

I think shit would be really spooky if you took this concept and intentionally played it out - for instance, if your actual player avatar sat in a room full of surveillance screens and had to guide another character through a maze filled with traps; the only way to actually control her being a two-way radio or another largely indirect tool.

Then imagine you could see shit she can't (such as the big demon manifesting behind her), and you probably would shout your lungs out as to tell her to GTFO of that room.

Or if you meant that filling a city with sim-humans in real time is impossible with modern or near-future technology, that's not necessary. You should be able to autogenerate characters for each player from a relatively small descriptor set, freeze them (save the descriptor) when that player isn't in town, and pull them to populate new models when the player is close enough to see. A sim city isn't necessary for this.

I didn't describe lamp post NPCs, faggot. An NPC doesn't need to be emulated at all when the player isn't there to be seen moving around and having a life when the player is there. And what I described can be done with predefined sandboxing or with AI (although AI would be a truly wasteful way to arrive at the same behavior.

You're still missing the point. Prices can change, NPC locations can change, NPC pictures can change, things can be built and destroyed without emulating a single NPC. The only reason you need NPC's is if a player is seeing or otherwise interacting with them at that moment The further away the player is the larger the scale you can do your emulations on. When the player gets close you fire up some NPC's within his viewing range.

Take aging, if you want to get hyper realistic, and apparently he does: Instead of keeping an active NPC eating resources just set a timer and tie abilities and appearance to the timer. Only when and if that NPC is activated the timer is called and then the NPC is created with that modification.

It's about the underpinnings. 2 layers below the graphics presentation layer, where data is being sent between machines. That's where the problem he's having lies, and I don't think cryengine even does that kind of thing for an MMO
