So finally people are turning on this gross trend. Its no secret they are designed right down to the animations to be habit forming. What surprises me is there are very clear addicts going into public panics over their "funpay minibuys" serotonin release fixes going away.

They claim "games need lockboxes to fund full content games" while neglecting to note that every good game that released in 2017 has no included them but all the trash like cawadoody and ass erect androgynous has them.

They get angry, irrational and scream that they aren't pachislot or gambling like any addict upset about losing their fix and are going full goy for companies like EA. Acting like they are a poor done to little guy operating at a loss to satisfying the entitled gabber goober gamer.

Do you know any of these addicts personally? I know of two that buy dozens of overwatch lockboxes each time a new skin event is up, they play maybe one game then dont touch it again till the next time where they do the same.
Currently they are both having public meltdowns over their fix being taken away.

Lockboxes are kind of important tbh, I don't want any schmuck rummaging through my sensitive documents.
Plus, especially the older ones tend to look really fancy. I have one with silken inlays in which I store the CPUs of PCs that died in the line of duty.

I used to have a steam friend who I played vidya with from time to time then the TF2 crate system hit and he became obsessed with them last I talked to him he spent most of his money on TF2 and overcuck loot boxes and admitted he rarely even played the games he just gambled on virtual shit.

I have not seen a single person, in real life or online, lament the potential loss of the loot box concept. You're gonna have to provide some examples or screencaps to convince me they exist.

It had potential but too many stupid flaws, like how you constantly had to warp back to town to grab another partner since you could never cover every contextual "use character with power here to proceed" situation. And then the endgame showed up and was incredibly stupid with its worse-than-MMO-tier RNG grind, which soured me on the game a lot. I would probably have bought it if it wasn't for the number of terrible design decisions.

i hope that passes so much. it's really hard to take lootboxes lightly and they ruin so many gaming experiences. i've been playing battlerite recently and it's an insanely fun top-down hero brawler game but despite not giving a shit about lootboxes from the get-go i found myself kind of hoping i'd get something cool looking from them after opening a bunch. i hate that they have the ability to take away the focus from the game. this hasn't happened to me (not with this game at least) but you could end up grinding boxes instead of enjoying the game and it's a real shame when a game that's actually good does it. they just turn it into a tedious experience instead of a fun one.

Note that I tried to get our mutual friends to play some of my own favorite games, but they refused cause they were 'too old' or 'too hard'. They listened to the League friend for whatever reason. Here's the kicker:
He buys riot points like it's going out of style. He buys riot points just to change his fucking name. Whenever a new skin comes out for one of the champions he mains, he buys it. Whenever a popular skin comes out for a new champion or a champion that is really OP for that meta, he buys the skin, even though I tell him that Riot is just going to do what they do every single time and nerf the hell outta them as soon as everyone is done buying the shitty ass skin.

On a related tangent, I was once kind of a lockbox addict on TF2. I only spent about 100 dollars in total over the many years of playing it, but I got tired of losing and ended up sharking little kids for their unusuals and selling them. I've gotten about 10 unusuals this way, totaling up to about $1000 so it wasn't that bad. I haven't sharked an unusual in so long, and I don't intend to go through the trouble of fucking with Steam's new retarded trading barriers.

Obviously, single player oriented games or those with fire and forget multiplayer shouldn't need any kind of ongoing profits. They should be able to do everything they need to, including a reasonable number of patches post-release based solely on sales. It's the games that require indefinite support that need some way to fund it because no matter how many copies they sell that money will EVENTUALLY run out. While I could definitely argue that Overwatch isn't doing ENOUGH to support the game, I very much agree that in its ideal state it NEEDS some kind of constant revenue stream.

Overwatch's particular implementation of loot boxes is by far the least evil they could possibly be. Not only do they have no impact on gameplay but all of the items are very easy to obtain without spending anything extra at all. Because they use their "gambling" scheme to target retards they are able to make the most amount of money with the least amount of impact towards anyone with 2 brain cells to rub together. Ultimately this means the best possible game experience for everyone else, so in that vein I fully support their decision to use loot boxes as they have.

To put that in perspective, let's compare it to two greater evils. One is what I assume the new battlefront game to be, where the exact same lootboxes, still obtainable through playing the game, contain very explicit "power items". The second is where those same power items are sold in an exclusive cash shop with no randomness and not available in the game at all.

One can clearly see how "non power" lootboxes are a lesser evil than "power" lootboxes. What might not be as clear is that even "power" lootboxes are a lesser evil than cash shop exclusive power. I would personally never play a game that sold power in ANY form, but for those who do it will always be better to have the opportunity to earn that power than not, no matter how convoluted the "earning" may be.

The EU will never, ever take action over profitable practices. Gotta protect those jobs and job providers. Even when shit is proven to be harmful to public health, they give slaps on wrists or outright dismiss cases because private companies would take jerbs down with them.
Still, the situation will have soured the image of the lootbox quite a bit. Just in time,too, with several companies starting to push "games as a service".

I'd like to point out how older online games, prior to the invention of in-app purchases, continued to support their games.

First, we have the yearly release. In other words, they simply didn't. They would release a game, patch it a couple of times if you were lucky, and then just expect everyone to buy the next game. This is horrible for a couple of reasons. Not only did it means that fully sensible players needed to shell out another $50 every time, but it also meant dead games. This is a big part of the reason that many good or even great games are completely dead now. The companies moved on to the next in the series and abandoned the actually good one. Sometimes the next game fails as well, and then you just have a dead series.

Second you have the expansion/map pack release. This is very similar to the yearly, but it keeps players in ostensibly the same game. Unfortunately, it segregates the (likely dwindling) playerbase, until eventually the game is no longer able to get enough players in one place to sustain itself. The new maps are often unplayable (because not enough people have the packs) and the old ones have no support, so the game dies.

Third, you have the subscription plan. For keeping a game going this is by far the best old option. It keeps everything concentrated into one game and ostensibly keeps the playerbase together. It's also the most expensive for the average user, costing a hundred or more dollars per year just to play the game.

If loot boxes selling cosmetic-only items available through normal gameplay are able to fund games in place of these above strategies, than by all means let's have more lootboxes.

Imagine WoW, and for some reason imagine you like playing WoW. Now, imagine that instead of both subscriptions and expansions, everything after the initial purchase is 100% free. Same content, but free. Now, imagine that they sold lootboxes, and in those lootboxes was a selection of random items from a given set of raids or zones, except that all of those items have no stats. The items are being sold for transmog purposes, except they are exact duplicates of items that you can get anyway (which happen to be on random drops to begin with). Oh, and the art team gets like 10x the funding and talent because that's where all the revenue comes from, but nothing else in the game suffers.

I can't imagine how anyone would say that this proposed system is not preferable to the one that already exists.

No MMO yet has used the "cosmetic only lootbox" concept that Overwatch currently uses. They use the traditional "pay to make it more fun" approach, which by definition means the game has to suck to start with.

The only game I can compare cosmetic lootboxes to is overwatch, because to the best of my knowledge nothing else uses them (yet). Whether you like overwatch or not, I would not say that any aspect of the quality suffers because of the lootboxes.

Who had a 3DS release which kept the lootbox aspect while making it free, by handing out what wad the paid secondary resource more or less every 3 battles and by unlocking of the different character banners by advancing through the story chapters, making you play the game as it was while removing the paid aspect of the lootboxes.

It shows that games can have such systems without even needing people to cash money like good goys. And it further shows how cancerous paid lootboxes can be.

When I played Black Desert Online after the western servers released, they of course held back on all their promises to lessen the cash shop impact and made sure it was scummy as possible. One of the common complaints was the rng-based dye system which of course gave you incentive to keep buying dye until you got the colors and amounts you wanted. Some faggot whale later gloated on the forums stating he "beat the dye system rng", how did he do it, you ask? He spent over $1000 on dye.

You could be on to something user, on a similar note I remember hearing about schools removing playground equipment or even stopping outside recess over the past few years (to prevent lawsuits from child injuries). Now supposedly this may actually harm a child mental and physical health as they won't develop proper risk assessment skills from playing on the equipment. Having no exposure to other random elements like gumball machine and Kinder's (banned in the US still?) as mentioned by other user's would also lower exposure to random elements for a child. Maybe America has unintentionally raised the current generation to lack of risk assessment in their youth when it comes to spending money?
As a kid, every time I got a Kinder it was a gift, so i was always grateful and the toys seemed pretty decent (especially the ones you assembled) but it helped when you weren't "aiming" to get something, when now it seems like they licensed the toys and the kids what a particular toy.
