Yes, creating a world that fit together seamlessly is something that .Hack//GU did incredibly well. Going to the BBS or the news page after a big event in-game and seeing the effects it had on the real world and the reactions of other people to said event really added to the game's immersion and enriched the world.
Not to mention that detective guy who had his own show (I forget the name, something like Sakura Aihaka) where he was investigating all the kids going into comas and the events lined up with the things Haseo was dealing with in game. Just thinking about it, it's really hitting me how good of a game GU was and how much effort they put into it.

I agree to a point. I think the idea and execution is neat, but feel as though they didn't go far enough with it. There should have been more useless junk to sort through in trying to find the relevant information, imo. Even if it would have added "clutter" it would have given a more real experience.
There aren't enough "in game" events in G.U., and you level way way too easily for it to feel anything like an mmo, especially in the remake where you level something like 3 times faster. I hit cap far before the end of the game, and thus the rest of it was really easy, and I didn't even really grind for it. I just went to one or two areas far higher than my current level and stomped the enemies to death anyway.
The arena battles are also entirely TOO dependent on level instead of skill, where they should have just used an excuse that flattens or raises everyone who enters stats to some preset point dependent on class. That would make the champions of a particular arena being something like 20 levels under that arena's level cap much much more understandable. As is having the person hyped up to be the champion of the level 100 palace walk out at level 75 is pretty immersion breaking. If they're going to crutch the story with the arena it really should have made more sense how these people got to this point.

From the perspective of a player I absolutely agree, but from the perspective of a developer who is working on limited time and assets, you need to be pragmatic about how many people are really going to sift through posts on a fake BBS or news site. Your average normalfag probably never visited the BBS outside of the few instances you had to for the story's sake.
Wow, I haven't gotten the remake yet but that is really troubling to hear. Leveling was already easy to do in the initial game, and the game got a lot less fun when you reached max level and most things (including story bosses) are dying in one hit.
The obvious answer is "Well don't level up too much" but having to handicap myself in a game is not something I enjoy doing.
I've heard that quite a few people have been complaining directly to Namco about the game being too easy., fingers crossed that they'll actually listen and maybe add a difficulty setting in a patch.

Basting is bad, just brine it. Much better.
