To top it all off, they start out in the middle of nowhere and it takes forever to get to zones other people actually play in, doubly so if you played a dark Cleric, Necromancer, or, heaven forbid, Shadow Knight.

There's nothing an Erudite can do that a Dark Elf, Gnome or, in the case of Paladins and Shadow Knights, Human can't do better.

On p1999 they make very good INT casters because of their high intelligence (highest of all races). I think high elves have an advantage for enchanters because of their charisma. What you might be thinking of is the fact that they make subpar clerics/paladins because their WIS is only average and everything except their INT is bad, INT being a useless stat for WIS casters.

Other than that, they don't have night vision (doesn't matter since you can turn the gamma up/down in EQemu + there are items that give it anyway) and other races have misc advantages (humans have highest strength of the INT caster races, so they can carry more shit, dark elves can hide while meditating, etc.)

The stat cap and endgame itemization makes that bonus negligible though. If you twink out your INT as an Erudite you'll end up with gear that's borderline useless because anything above 200 is diminished heavily and 255 is a hard cap. Both of these numbers can be reached easily even by a Human with no bonus points because INT is so common at end game, not even including buffs. You could use alternative gear, like CHA if you are an Enchanter or direct mana, but those aren't as common nor are they as potent. It's usually better to skirt the edge of as many plateaus as possible.

Keep in mind though this is all mostly from memory and early on in the game's lifespan. I'd imagine by now the cap is either gone or everything just increases mana/whatever directly making the cap pointless anyway.
