I play it occasionally with a friend (who is not a professional, he works an 8-4 shift at a medical company) and he regularly just casually shits inside of pro players. We've played against this pair of pros queuing together that were a Cassie and a Victor, and he just lived inside both of their assholes simultaneously. He's not all that good at a lot of games we even play, it's just the barrier to being a pro doesn't fucking exist anymore.

Paladins would be a great game that I'd play regularly if it had a playerbase that wasn't either bronze players or pro players with no in-between

Now we have many smaller shows made by many studios while still having a few safe children's shows to fall back on. Anime is much cheaper and easier to make too. These tournaments don't need to be profitable, they are simply a form of marketing. It's cheaper than running television advertisements used to be, and pushes your product constantly. It creates shills that will constantly market your game without you paying them a dime because it's their "career" and you effortlessly reach your target demographic of young males every time you broadcast a tournament. Corporations realize this and that is why they are now putting money into them. At least for Shadowverse, the Japanese Hearthstone, during the time westerners still played the game, the Nip "pros" were actually just fucking terrible. You would watch the finals of their premier tournament and the players would somehow manage to misplay almost every time there was an option and sometimes when there wasn't.

Not only is it a young concept, it's also pretty much self contained, as even the most casual of normalfags can't be bothered to care about high-level competitive videogames, so it makes sense that its infrastructure can't come close to that of normal sports, yet these organizers still aim for the absolutely bombastic events, complete with high-capacity, high-cost venues, high expenses, over-the-top style, and other unnecessary shit, instead of remaining relatively modest like the fighting community does with its tournaments.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not into esports either and I don't defend them, it's just that I find it non-sensical that people continue to push this approach of turning esports into the next big thing when it clearly lacks not just the experience but also the capacity to actually hold the pressure that regular sports events take, just look at all the major mishaps that tend to happen even among high-profile devs, like valve's Shanghai Shitshow with dota.

The only true real esports at the moment are CS:GO, Dota 2 and LoL. Almost everything else is artificial and only kept alive by money from the developers, see: Overwatch, HotS, Call of Duty and dime a dozen mobileshit (you also could count or count out PUBG since it seems to be a up and comer, but it's a very random game and will probably bomb IMO.) CS:GO scene is quite healthy at the moment, despite decreasing player numbers, the watch numbers on majors was up from last year IIRC. Seeing the best of the best compete is pretty enjoyable since CS:GO is generally a pure skill game and there's little randomness that can tilt a game to one side.

Fighting games and good FPS games (e.g. Quake) have the problem that there is just too much of a performance gap between even relatively closely-skilled players. The top players can easily go 50-0 vs. most of the other players in tournaments. It's like the korea problem with starcraft except instead of only one country being good it's a dozen or so people. At least when you watch starcraft even relatively weak players tend to have a 25% chance or so of beating a top player.

Medics in Brood War had a much lower priority than in later games. For example, Marines, Firebats, and visible Ghosts were the highest priority in the Terran tree, and for Protoss, it was Zealots, Dragoons, and High Templar. If the sunken colonies had anything else to attack, then they would target that unit priority
level until none existed. Medics were broken in that since Terran in the base game had no way to heal organic units at all, the developers added the medics with a low priority based on the fact that they cannot attack. What they did not realize was that the computer was not able to target Medics healing units that were attacking and destroying turrets. This happened to a lesser extent with Photon Cannons as most Protoss players would use those for detection and not as the main defense. Zerg used colonies to expand the Creep, the pink stuff covering the ground, and since colonies cost only 175 minerals to provide additional creep and defenses, Sunken and Spore Colonies were overbuilt accordingly.

tl;dr, Medics were deemed to be less threatening, so automated actions would avoid targeting them unless nothing else was in range, and if something with a higher priority momentarily entered range, then the colonies would attack that unit.

Dota never improved since then because every tourney after that was very cringe worthy. Shang Hai was some really cringy shit, but it put a dent on Perfect World's reputation.
