SWITCH STANCES
Not only do the different stances give you quicker/more powerful attacks, but the low stance gives you more i-frames and has less recovery than the others.
Also, you don't need to do the full triangle x3 combo every time you have an opportunity to get a hit in, you can interrupt your attacks with dodges (which is more effective if you switch stances while attacking, particularly switching to low stance). Don't think of it like a Souls game, attacks are significantly less committal in Nioh.

As for everything else, take this user's advice , it's all spot on.

When you catch fire, spam dodges to put it out.
When the lock on reticle is red, press triangle (or whatever the equivalent of triangle is on the controller you're using). It does a special attack that deals a lot of damage.

this is how you destroy every enemy and boss in nioh.

5. Learn the stance dance. Odachi users need not apply.

7. Don't dodge in mid unless you really have to. Mid is for sweeps and blocking.
8. You get extra iframes in low when dodging.
9. Salt deals heavy Ki damage to Youkai.
10. Kayaku-dama and Horoku-dama (fire bombs) are very useful in the beginning for taking out bigger foes from a distance. You can get a refilling type as ninjutsu.

This is one of those bosses where you have to learn their tells and git gud. You're early on so there's no way of cheesing it. Focus on slapping his ass, especially in high stance.

i can't tell you if this is Universally Agreed Strategy material, but when i'm learning and feeling out a new boss I always do it in medium stance because it's that balance of speed, dodge and power. don't get fancy with stance changes until you know exactly what you're doing. at this early stage you can, largely, just brute-force your way in; you don't need to worry about the crazy stance changes everyone's suggesting. later, once you've unlocked some techniques for your chosen weapon(s) you'll have more tools in the box to pull out, but at this stage i'd recommend switch to middle stance, focus on learning his patterns, and whack his stupid ass when he gives you that big opening. also, spirit mode you fucking gaylord it's basically a Fuck You Boss I Win button at the early levels

Looks to me user you are just very poor at judging risk versus reward. At the end right before you died you got greedy, and ran straight in to do damage when you should have struck him a couple times, maybe one time, and then backed off. You took a huge risk for very little reward, because if you screwed up which you did you were going to die.

DaS helps because you learn to have enough space in between enemies and can dodge attacks just by moving outside of the weapon hitboxes.
I rarely have to dodge unless I'm going on the offensive

In Nioh, the skill trees for weapons are all different but every single one of them includes a skill tree where you get the ability to ki pulse and change stances at the same time. You don't need to be a professional at the start, but you should really make it a habit to tap that R1 button every time you finish a combo, and master the timing of it. You can get back almost all the stamina you spent on your combo by doing this and launch another devastating combo.
Well, in addition to the skill tree I mentioned before, every weapon also has a skill you can get for every stance, which is always "If you switch to this stance as you are ki pulsing, your next attack does more damage. " On top of that, if your first combo stuns the enemy (This can happen frequently with Oni because breaking their horns leaves them stunned) you can switch into high stance and turn your target into fucking paste.

Oh and one more thing, I hope you remember the fucking tutorial which showed you that ki pulsing purifies demon essence shit which drains your stamina. You remembered that right?

Blocking can safely keep you next to the boss in the first phase because he's not going to be hitting you twice in succession. Knowing this you can block and roll away if you don't think you can properly avoid the spinning attack. You don't need to do it all the time but It's good when trying to reposition yourself because you can move while blocking.

It's also important against fast enemies or ninjas using low stance. Block their attacks and slap them back in low/mid stance. If it's a big guy then block the hit in high stance and roll to safety.

Because the game is more like Onimusha than Dark Souls. But I don't think many here have played Onimusha so they compare it to Dark Souls. You can't play this aggressively in Dark Souls due to no Ki-pulse.

A heavy shield and a fast weapon like a curved sword or rapier makes all the games easy. Same with magic.

Not cheating at all. It's a tool that's made to be used. What's important though is that it removes stun lock, can be used when you're out of stamina, and pushes away enemies. Ki pulsing during it also makes it last longer. If you use it again, it also allows you to summon your spirit to attack the enemy. Use it often as it recharges pretty quickly.

Can confirm, i5 4670k (no overclock, don't ask) and gtx760 and the game runs perfectly fine with shadows disabled which honestly shocked the shit out of me because I was expecting a Nier Automata-tier port

Ki pulse or salt to remove the youkai aura immediately.
Strong attack to break his horns.
Know when to dodge and know when to block.
Remember to switch stances.
Have living weapon fully charged and ready to save your bacon.
Guardian Spirit talismans. You should always have those equipped unless you're using a spirit built around augmenting you rather than direct attacking. And even then it still doesn't hurt now that we get 4 sets of item shortcuts.

The second boss was really a lot easier. I think I found a cheese tactic, just two times poke and back off. I didn't even need to ki charge or switch stances.

Slightly unrelated but how the fuck do you guys get the codex version to work? I downloaded it, installed it and then installed that update too but it seems to fuck over the crack since trying to launch the game it opens steam. Old crack just makes the game crash at launch, new one makes it open steam.

How is the Kusarigama? I immediately picked that as my first weapon because of how unique it seemed, but I'm wondering if I might be making the game harder for myself. The first two bosses (not counting the prologue) have really kicked my ass and I typically have to pull out Living Weapon for anything big.

All Yokai have a glowing weak spot. Break it to drain their ki, then you can stunlock them and fuck their shit up.

Alternatively, throw salt on them to drain their ki.

that's your hitpoints. if you get hit too often by bad guys you lose the game. i'd start by avoiding being hit in order to mitigate this damage.
