Whatever criticisms there are about the quality aside, Odyssey has an absolutely insane amount of content, something hatty time can't even come close to competing with
BUT while both have some really strong platforming controls even the VERY polished Mario controls come off as a bit clunky compared to Hat Kid's
Odyssey feels like every movement option is given very strict rules about where and how you can use them
yes on occasion you can do some fancy stuff involving hat throw into dive, but thats pretty much where the depth ends
meanwhile hatty time lets you save your double jump until after a wall jump, dives can be canceled and give speed boosts if timed right, missing the ledge by a pixel isn't a death sentence, hell you can even get a power up that ignores the obligatory wasted time of a botched dive into a wall
you never feel like you're denied control at any point, if you think somethings worth trying, odds are it'll work
Odyssey has a pace it set and it makes damn sure you're gonna follow that pace no matter what
A Hat in Time lets you break that pace the second you realize that you can

Being not a retard and understanding you mean in quality, not sales, eh. There's clearly a lot of effort put into AHiT, and the mod support is great, but its short, and there's a lot of little issues that keep it from being fantastic. Odyssey has the problem of being real easy, but it has a lot more movement options, it's much longer, and it managed to have both alternate hats and alternate outfits.

Hat in time has collision issues and doesn't have a ton of content. It's art style is lacking as well. I am liking a hat in time but you can instantly tell that Mario is the game with more total development time.

The speedruns for this game are insane, and have actually changed my opinion of Odyssey heavily, for that last point you raised.
I only thought the game was railroading me, in the ways I could get things. But watching the game be beaten in under an hour and a half, on a bad run, had me realizing I could use the skills I acquired from beating it, to really blitz through previous challenges.

The craziest part is it's borderline Super Metroid, with how much they let you skip if you're good. What I thought was a fun game, with a lot of unnecessary dependency on captures and gimmicks, lacking in platforming challenges, turned out to have had the entire game built around that.

To get back on topic, I think a hat in time is the better game. It seems to be made with the classic platformer design mentality of designing worlds around around how the character moves. Whereas Odyssey seems to be the other way round, a world that is designed first, with a character designed to move around in it. It's why most of the worlds feel so vacant and flat, and why there's 600 power moons dropped around in every level. The game has become about the destination instead of the journey.
Even though, I haven't played either game yet, because hahahahaha, switch on the one hand and fuck paying 30 bucks for a game that seems to last 5 hours on the other hand.

Just posting to say the Mafia King boss in Hat in Time does not represent the rest of the game's bosses.
They move much faster, have more moves & variations on them, and require quicker reflexes.

I like the music so much more in AHiT as well as the controls. It seems like Mario has a bit of delay when doing jumps as well as being "slippery". I'm not sure if it's due to comparing using an Xbox 360 controller for AHiT vs the switch remotes in Odessy.

AHiT has tons of places where hatgirl would slide and stop moving. Thankfully there is a failsafe to avoid being trapped where the game would place you back to a known standing position, or simply let you jump out of the forced slide after a short time. Also one of the downsides in AHiT is the models that aren't fully rigged as well as clipping issues.
"Polish" isn't a buzzword as it's referring to actual touching up of the game after everything is working and the game is fully playable.

While I've enjoyed AHIT's charm, general style, and gameplay more, Mario Odyssey simply has so much more content to offer while still being bright, fun, cheery, etc.

I still prefer A Hat In Time. But objectively speaking, they can't compare since Gears for Breakfast didn't have even close to the amount of money Nintendo did to put into a game.

I really hope we see something similiar to AHIT from Gears For Breakfast again though. AHIT was great, and i'm still playing it on and off whenever steam workshop makers put out new stuff.

AHIT is a very basic game. Though fun even in spite of its total lack of challenge, it's produced on an indie budget in comparison to the monetary resources available at Nintendo. Just look at the transitions between 3D and 2D as you play a side-scroller version of Mario in 2D ON A FUCKING WALL WITHIN A 3D-RENDERED WORLD. The engineering required to pull off that feat would require the highest-paid developers, something that couldn't be remotely achieved by an indie game like AHIT, and that's just a single example.
