Have you ever collected welfare and what country do you live in? Here in so-called "socialist" Canada we have workfare and it pays a paltry $700CAD/month. You can't live on that. And you have to apply for jobs and make regular trips to the workforce office. And do job interview workshops and stuff. People on welfare are insanely poor. Disability is $1,100CAD/month and the onus is on you to prove that you are disabled.

1. Every unemployed man aged 18-25 was forced to enlist in a government-controlled labor army. It provided the state with cheap labor and an opportunity to further militarize and indoctrinate society as a whole. Of course, they were not counted as unemployed in statistics.

2. Women were discouraged from getting employment through financial incentives and carefully-crafted propaganda. Their "duty" was to stay home, be good wives and have as many children as possible to ensure demographic dominance over Europe.

3. Needless to say, Jews were gradually forced out of the workforce — especially public service from which they were excluded altogether from the get-go. This allowed "Aryans" to walk in and occupy these now vacant professional positions. Moreover, Jews who fled the country had part of their assets confiscated.

4. Labor unions were banned, industrial actions were outlawed and organized workers were persecuted. Wages remained markedly lower than they were before Hitler rose to power and working hours grew longer as the limitations on the length of the workweek were abolished.

5. Compliance was bought off through a combination of ubiquitous propaganda and mindless entertainment. Germans swayed by Hitler's charisma paradoxically embraced both glorified self-sacrifice for the "greater good" and shallow enjoyment of cheap radios and tourism.

6. Industry and banking went through a wave of privatization unheard of in the West at the time, so much that they actually coined the word "Reprivatisierung" to define it. It was used as a tool to garner support from the business community. Basically, industrialists and bankers would swear political allegiance in exchange for monopolies.

7. Large-scale public work programs were hardly exclusive to Nazi Germany — the New Deal was enacted the same year the NSDAP seized power. The difference, however, was that the Nazis favored military spending over civilian spending. Newly-created jobs were mostly associated with war production in one way or another, especially in the armament industry.

8. Military expenditure, by the way, was unsustainable. It stood at more than 10% of GDP and vastly exceeded real economic growth. The only way it wouldn't collapse on itself was to do exactly what it was designed for in the first place: going to war.

9. The Wehrmacht and Schutzstaffel looted conquered territories. They annexed land and plundered resources (including currency and gold reserves). They saw that as the justified expansion of the "Aryan" Lebensraum over areas formerly inhabited by "lesser races".

10. Germans deemed "undesirable", abducted foreign civilians and captured POWs were forced to work for the war effort in labor camps for no pay in horrendous conditions which often lead to death through illness, hunger or exhaustion. Towards the end of the war, one in four people working for Nazi Germany was effectively a slave.

tl;dr the decrease in unemployment in Nazi Germany was the result of authoritarian, arbitrary, exploitative, unsustainable policies that were mostly a smokescreen for them preparing to unleash a devastating war that would burn Europe to the ground again.
