That "sever the connection and kill the x" thing only happened if you killed a sectoid buffing another sectoid with "MIND LINK(?)" which is a completely different ability. Mind control, even in nuCOM 1, hell even in the originals, was always severed by killing the controller.

Just use common sense, user, and also War of the Chosen is extremely forgiving if you're playing on normal difficulty, git gud.

Sectoids are literally even more babyfied than the last game if you aren't a complete autist. They always go for a panic on their first turn, so you literally have two entire turns to just kill them. Not to mention that even if they do mind control someone you can just flashbang them and all their mind powers are removed.

after playing for a while I noticed a couple of things that are not self-evident for players going in blind
1. Getting a SPARK built is an absolute priority early game.
2. Psi soldiers are OP as all fuck and should be a priority, considering they are being trained and promoted passively all day long.
3. Gorilla network is an ASAP kind of building that allows you to passively insta-promote soldiers with minimal risk on covert ops, and should be built BEFORE the gorilla tactics school.
4. You give your skulljack to your SPECIALIST not your ranger, as opposed to the first game where usually the scout got the portable pocket pence.
5. Lids aint shit that get rekt by neutral resistance forces, Spectres are the new lids. When choosing between killing a muton and killing a spectre, concentrate your fire on the spectre.
5. Rangers are for the scouting, not the shooting. Dont even try repurposing one to a sniper, they got shit for damage even with plasma.
6. Skirmishers are extremely useful later on due to combat utility and fast repositioning. They can rope in an enemy from serious distance to an adjascent tile conveniently neighboring a blademaster ranger.
7. Templars are tanky as fuck, and by that I mean insanely tanky and have fucking AOE melee, great for taking out big game.
8. Sectoids are ridiculously tanky early game and are the reason grenades exist.
9. Chosen fortresses should not be attempted before magnetic weaponry and basic armor. After that entirely doable without losing a soldier. The main issue with the fortresses is that due to respawning enemies you have to account for unavoidable damage.

Sparks have a lot of HP for early game standarts and can act as bait and damage buffer. They also deal some serious damage and are a great failsafe to fall back onto when shit goes south because of their overdrive ability which allows to walk, reload, and shoot on the same turn.

The changes to resistance missions by having a few resistance fighters as a third force is one thing I like about the expansion.

Pretty sure it was. My experience with this is that unlike the snek and the spectre they come way too late and don't bring enough to the table.

They only do one thing and that is to require you to have some form of shredding/AP or else they can make your life hell.

They're also easily bullied and isolated by a half decent specialist. I mean, the only time they're a real pain is if you cluster and they grenade.

You should install A Better Advent + A Better Campaign Plus, which adds about a dozen new variants of Advent troops.
You should also install Advent Bio Troops, which adds variant Troopers, Captains and Vipers that use poison/acid rounds or acid spit.
You should also think about getting the Additional Enemy Perks mod, which gives every ayy one or two extra abilities, such as giving Solace to all sectoids, making Avatars uncrittable unless you overcome their increased dodge, and so on. It also increases pod sizes by 1-2 across the board and allows pretty much any enemy types to appear in any given reinforcement pod provided the global force level is at the appropriate value.
Then install the MOCX initiative that adds ADVENT-trained counter-operatives impersonating XCOM who will crash your missions and who all have XCOM classes and abilities - watch out for the grenadiers and remember that high level MOCX rangers will likely all have Bladestorm or Reaper.

XCOM 2 was bizarrely balanced around alpha-striking enemy pods to death before they can act. These mods all make that highly unlikely, while also giving the enemy the ability to alpha strike your entire squad to death in a single turn if you let them.
Combine this all with Beta Strike (doubled xcom and enemy HP) and Time Turner (doubled mission timers) optional modes, and you have a game that's appropriately slowed down and punishing as hell.
At least, it'll have to do until LW2 for WOTC is released, assuming it's any good. I found LW2's first iteration lacking with too much focus on stealth. LW1 is pretty much the only way to enjoy XCOM1 though.

Might as well install LW2 and throw out the lube for good measure.
